    Building On Cambridge St

This by email from Ron Clayton. Andy, I've come across this stone before and been wary of flagging it up in case it 'walks'. Daft I know but it ought to go somewhere safe before Sevenstone starts up.Coal Pit Lane[Cambridge St]had a house in the C17th with the crossed daggers [Cutlers Company] and a door lintel with the initials LJS. There is a drawing by W. Topham [1877 showing a Cutlers House with a different sort of stone above the doorway - its not a million miles away from the location of the one in question. I think someone has said that it could indicate the owner had been master cutler. Regards Ron

    Coal Pit Lane

Yes more or less but still you've got Coal Pit Lane much further down ? But then again, in those days I suppose everything was more spread out and not as congested as today.
  11. Wellington (existing data), Coal Pit Lane, Elias Shirt. SS8 68/141 Pages 69 and 70 appear to have a problem. That's me lot for today, 11 postings - taken all day to find/post. Somebody please remind me why I/we do this ... Added to A-Z

  14. OK Folks, another exciting series of postings, this time 645 of 'em from 1901 Trade Directory; not to be confused with Stuart0742's 1901 Census (though I have included updates from there and posted Thanks). This is Pubs with a known keeper only. Pubs without a known keeper are listed on another posting. As usual Name, Address, Year Opened (if known), Closed (if known), Span of Years (difficult when Opened and/or Closed are unknown), Keeper "A", "B", "C" in bite-sized chunks, I also like to let Admin I'm breathing down his "Baked-Potato 4 for a Pound-type head" with the postings !!! Wait for the OwlsTalk Flood to accidently turn on ... "A" Pubs (any comments, corrections (with some kind of evidence please), Mickey-taking etc gratefully received) All postings are "best guess", if I have the "Sweaty Nun" listed as open in 1901, it just means thats the earliest reference I have found to it with a Landlord/Landlady, it's probably wrong, may well have been open earlier - if you know, please let me know. Thanks Muchly. Known keeper, 1901 Trade Directory ONLY. Polly Bettaneys

SteveHB Did you live in the village ? if so you must remember there was also a breadshop at the bottom of Coal Pit lane opposite Birchenoughs farm. It was painted a red colour. The Gennel which ran down the side of the bread shop also had a host of cottages, most of them hidden fro few on the left going down towards Rural Lane (Fox Lane), If my memory is correct I believe the Fearn Family lived in at least one of the cottages. If You remember Polly Bettaneys you must remember this as well,

A couple of discrepancies, but the ages and birthplaces match the 1841 census: 1851 census piece 2337 folio 321 page 24 Ct 9 Carver St (Ecclesall Bierlow) Geo DAVIDSON Head Marr 64 DBY die sinker DBY Chesterfield Mary DAVIDSON Wife Marr 56 scissor burnisher Sheffield Ann DAVIDSON Dau Unm 28 washer woman Sheffield Carver St is close to Coal Pit Lane (which is now called Cambridge St). The different spelling of this surname is always likely to happen. The change in occupation is more unexpected. I think this is the burial of Mary: Burial at St Paul's, Pinstone St DAVISON Mary 30 May 1852 57y Carver St wi George No sign of George in this graveyard, or anywhere else I have checked. There are these two children at St Paul's: Burials at St Paul's DAVISON Sarah 4 Mar 1821 da George [no age listed] DAVISON George 25 Sep 1822 1y so George In the 1841 census there is an Ann DAVISON aged 17 who is a servant in the household of a solicitor in Paradise Square (ref piece 1338/2 folio 51 page 41) Hugh

    The Catholic Churches/Chapels of Sheffield

The first post reformation Catholic Chapel was attached to the house of the Duke of Norfolk's agent, John Shireburn on the edge of town in Coal Pit Lane some time after 1701. John Shireburn later moved to a new house at the corner of Fargate and Norfolk row known by many names including the Lord's House and worship would once again have taken place in the centre of Sheffield. In 1814 the Lord's House was dismantled and in 1816 a New Chapel was contructed at a cost of approximatley £3,000. http://www.picturesheffield.co.uk/cgi-bin/...jpgh/s05077.jpg
