  1. Carbrook County Junior School

  2. Arthur Middleton

Arthur Middleton was the son of Benjamin Middleton (born in Wellingborough) who was also in the coal haulage business but sold up and retired to Cleethorpes due to ill health. Arthur was at one time the Landlord of the George IV on Infirmary Road in Sheffield and his son Desmond Peter Middleton was a founder member of the 1st SAS serving under Colonal Paddy Mayne in WW2. His daughter Veda was Headmistress of Carbrook County Junior School. http://tabbs.magix.net/website/desmond_peter_middleton.28.html#Desmond Peter Middleton
  3. Carbrook County Junior School

Veda Gwendoline Middleton was reputed to be the first woman Head Teacher appointed in Sheffield when she became Head of Carbrook County Junior School. However I am not able to confirm this. Her father Arthur Middleton was at one time Landlord of the George IV on Infirmary Road in Sheffield (he was also reputed to be the only teetotal Landlord in Sheffield). Her brother was Desmond Peter Middleton born in 1921 at the George IV, who was a founder member of the SAS serving under Colonal Paddy Mayne. One of their relatives - Madam Cecilia was a palmist and clairvoyant I believe in Southport at one time - and Veda had a little of the 'gift'. One time when Peter was missing presumed dead, Veda woke up one night to see Peter and comrades in a boat in rough water at the end of her bed - she said to her mother "it's okay Des is alive" and sure enough, apparently he had escaped from Sicily in a leaky boat. Veda was mentioned by Michael Liversidge a former pupil in his book "Attercliffe - Another Wander up the 'Cliffe". http://www.bbc.co.uk/history/ww2peopleswar/stories/15/a3297215.shtml http://tabbs.magix.net/website/desmond_peter_middleton.28.html#Desmond Peter Middleton
  4. Desmond Peter Middleton - born January 1921 at the George IV on Infirmary Road, Sheffield died December 1981 Founder member of the 1st SAS serving under Colonal Paddy Mayne. Very proud of his Sheffield roots. He became a Maths and Science Teacher after the war. Mentioned in the books The SAS in World War II by Gavin Mortimer and SAS with the Maquis June - September 1944 by Ian Wellsted. http://tabbs.magix.net/website/#Desmond http://www.bbc.co.uk/history/ww2peopleswar/stories/15/a3297215.shtml

Yes - I have uploaded 2 photos of my Grandfather Arthur Middleton who was Landlord at the George IV in 1921 where my father was born and the other photo although not very clear is of him outside the George IV on Infirmary Road.
