  1. From British Industries Review, September 1924. This proved to be awkward to scan as the pages were wider than my A4 scanner and were not very well cut. I managed to get all the text and images in (just!) Page 1 Page 2 Page 3 Page 4

  3. I make occasional visits to Sheffield and have a few photos. I shall be back in March with my husband who likes to film things, so I should have some film to share at a later date. From the days of test running before the passenger service started, car 202 coming off the new line at Meadowhall South/Tinsley Car 204 waiting on the curve. It is a very tight curve. A visit in late December: Cars 201 & 206 at the low height platforms at Rotherham Central Station 206 passing the heavy rail platforms at Rotherham 206 approaching Parkgate 206 at the Parkgate terminus 206 leaving Parkgate and rejoining the main line The other end of the route: Cathedral Although a couple of heavy rail trains were seen passing Parkgate, the chance to get shots of main line trains and tram-trains together was scuppered by train guards being on strike. As my next visit will be on a Friday there should (hopefully) be a proper train service running. I am also looking to use additional locations for photography and filming as I will have more time.
  4. That looks rather more convincing than my first suggestion. I based it to some extent on the belief that at such an early date the original Tinsley to Nether Edge route was still operating, but I was mistaken. As early as 1901 Tinsley was linked with Millhouses, so the Millhouses terminus seems a likely answer, especially with the additional evidence presented.
  5. My first thought is Wostenholm Road near the junction with Priory Place, but I don't have time to look in more detail at the moment.

  9. I will be heading to the Carlton Colville in September as part of a holiday in Suffolk. I have managed to pick the trolleybus weekend, so who knows if 513 will be in use. Anyway, a couple of shots of 513 in Blackpool on 11th August 1985. I wasn't able to be in Blackpool for the main Centenary celebrations so had a day out on what turned out to be a very wet August day. Thankfully the rain stopped enough for me to get some photos without ruining my camera! I also need to find and re-scan my negatives of these shots as technology and my editing skills have improved a lot since I originally scanned them. And one from November 2009 when 513 was used on a tour to commemorate the end of street running in Fleetwood before the rebuilding for the new trams. This was also a very wet day and photos were taken with a small point & shoot camera. I certainly wasn't getting any expensive camera kit out in that weather. As with Gordon's photo from 2010 above, 513 looked very smart indeed at the time.

C C Hall mentions that agreement between the Corporation and North Western to jointly operate services to Castleton and Buxton was made in 1927 or 1928, so it seems likely that North Western operated into Sheffield on the Castleton route 72 until that company's demise. A quick comparison between the current route 271/272 timetable and that of the 72 from 1967 does indeed show that timings of the North Western journeys and the current Hulleys journeys are not that dissimilar, although there is some variation due to the current service being more evenly spaced and more frequent.

  12. I photographed this odd couple from Savile Street in 2010, largely because of the way the cladding on Savile House was incomplete because of the derelict building next door. A bit of research when back at home gaveme the answer that the derelict building was the remains of the Don Sawmills and was a listed building, this probably explaining why it remained in place (and falling into ever worse decrepitude) rather than having been demolished.   13. I have a soft spot for this building on the corner of Broomhall Street and Devonshire Street. I love the various decorative parts which to me raise it above what could have been quite an ordinary works and office building. What do we know about the Wharncliffe Fire Clay Works and John Armitage & Sons (as seen in the second set of photos)? Click on the image for the full size image

  16. Merged all the topics about the Gloops Club into one. My main memory of Gloops is a little off the wall. When he was young my father decided that the then Queen looked like Gloops and always referred to her as such. Hence throughout my life both my mother & father referred to Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother as Gloops. It was only when I mentioned it to friends that I realised that it was just my family who used the term.

A couple of other royal visits during the horse tram period were 16th August 1875 - Prince & Princess of Wales opening Firth Park and 30th June and 1st July 1885 - Prince of Wales visiting an Industrial Exhibition. The answer appears to be the former of these two visits, according to Picture Sheffield
  18. Had a look for this online as I have never seen it (having been in a television-free household for almost 25 years). Curiously it is one of the episodes of Time Team not available on All4 - plenty are available but not this one, of course. It is available on Youtube at the moment - who knows how long for, though

  20. Harborough Avenue and Woodthorpe is served by the 25 these days. There hasn't been a frequent service such as the 71 along Prince of Wales Road for some time. Gratuitous bus photo time I remember those 1979 built Roe bodied buses well as they seemed to be the regular performers for some time on the 51, my route into Town. I also associate them with the 13 & 14 routes as well. Another of the 1979 batch of Roe bodied Atlanteans, 1737 (which had a non-matching registration) was given a nice blue and white livery at some time in the mid-80s.
