  1. An interesting post card picture of the Wicker but what is this thing on the nearest pole? My apologies if this has been posted before but though I seem to remember seeing this object before I can't find the post or remember an answer. ------------- https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/382550153334?ul_noapp=true
  2. Is that Brothwell & Essam please? If so we had a post about some of their bottles here. ----------
  3. There is a newspaper photo' on this interesting post, by vox , about telegram boys in the blitz. ------------ And here is a row of G.P.O. BSA Bantams, not Sheffield mind. ------------
  4. Yes, if my memory is correct there were six in a row and you still had to queue for one at busy times in the 50's and 60's.
  5. Any information on this interesting photo' please? I remember a few marches in the 70's, I was on the buses and they often made it impossible to keep to running times.
  6. That was one of the things I first noticed here. A friend of mine who recently visited Canada tells me that they consider "street furniture" dangerous and try to keep such signs to a minimum.
  7. I may be my age but to me "then" usually looks better than "now".
  8. Yes it's a shame what's happened to some areas of Sheffield (and other cities) , even in my younger days this area, though not posh any more, was still OK for going out at night and I frequented many of the pubs and clubs.
  9. A stand of vending machines here at Firvale Creamery, also sweet jars on stands outside, I doubt you could do that at Firvale now days, what a shame things have gone that way. ----------- (c) Picture Sheffield --------- http://picturesheffield.com/frontend.php?keywords=Ref_No_increment;EQUALS;u07472&pos=5&action=zoom&id=97906
  10. An interesting postcard on Ebay, I think it's the corner of Scott Road but not sure as I have not seen the area in many years. I think it would have been considered a nice area to live in 1917. -------------- https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/382549642837?ul_noapp=true
  11. No , there were no trolley buses, but we had a post on them here -------
  12. Yes, I agree, it looks like an all Leyland Titan PD2/1 - H30/26R. These were withdrawn between 1963 and 1965 .
  13. Oops, sorry SteveHB I didn't realize I had doubled up on the link you put on, perhaps I should go to that well known optician.
  14. It's good to revive some of these old but interesting posts Myke , I always wondered about these houses many years ago when I passed them regularly. They remind me of buildings in the Poirot films..
  15. Yes, opposite direction to the one on this recent post but an earlier year. The prefab' Castle House was built in 1950 to replace the B&C shop damaged in the blitz. ------------
  16. This looks like it on the second map Edmund put on this post -----------
  17. We have a "Royal Visits to Sheffield " post here including some good pictures of the 54 one. -------------
  18. That's a good picture of The Derby, I spent a while looking for a picture of that pub for another post but never found that one. That picture brings back some good memories, thank you.
  19. For anyone who hasn't received the emails or news there is an update on the sale at this link and it is not good news, please can anyone who has not signed now think about doing so. ------------- https://www.change.org/p/13408180/u/23147710?utm_medium=email&utm_source=petition_update&utm_campaign=402846&sfmc_tk=8%2bK7I8FzmP8%2fYMlrlJtyWXPWQtmEM6%2bEn0vtNpRMP6e2iICmD5TG14apyQGatse4&j=402846&sfmc_sub=281019368&l=32_HTML&u=65027631&mid=7259882&jb=1
  20. Sign here --------- https://www.change.org/p/sheffield-city-council-sheffield-city-council-don-t-sell-off-birley-spa-bath-house ------------- as for the valuation, If what I have read is correct, half a million was spent on this place in 2002, what kind of thinking is it that after what must have been a major renovation, no provision was made for (cheap) maintenance.
  21. It has just been brought to my attention that Sheffield council are about to sell Birley Spa with a guide price of £75,000 to £100,000. Personally I think this is wrong and have signed the petition to that effect. A couple of links below -------- https://www.sheffieldforum.co.uk/showthread.php?p=11908770#post11908770 ---------- https://www.change.org/p/sheffield-city-council-sheffield-city-council-don-t-sell-off-birley-spa-bath-house ------------ https://www.briefreport.co.uk/news/calls-to-protect-victorian-bath-house-as-it-is-put-up-for-sale-5798603.html ------------ https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-south-yorkshire-45059591 --------------
  22. Thank you, yes it looks very interesting, I'll be doing a search on the internet for any for sale.
  23. Any chance of the next two pages please neddy ? Also I have not come across "Sheffield Telegraph Rambles" before and it looks very interesting, can you tell me please what years they were published and the frequency of publication?
  24. I did have something similar some time ago but one of the blades was a small two pronged fork and there were two sizes of spanner, I think it was described as a picnic / cyclists knife or something like that. Here is one described as sportsman's knife bike knife for sale at £100.00 which doesn't look in as good a condition as yours. ------------ https://www.etsy.com/uk/listing/537866676/jhon-milner-rare-sportsmans-knife-bike
