    Bardwells electronic shop has closed

Another reason for the demise of Bardwell's was that discrete components like transistors, resistors, capacitors etc are very often all in dedicated microchips these days so the pleasure of building an electronic device from discrete components is no more, sadly.

    Watch shops

Hi. I have recently acquired a pocket watch, probably new 1920-30. The face is marked "Pleasance Sheffield". Normally, this is the mark of the retailer but I cannot find a shop of that name that sold watches. Can anyone help please?

Can any one tell me what the RAC is short for on the attached headstone please?

    Open Air Schools

If you lived on Lonsdale Road, Walkley and needed an open air school in the early 1920's which would be the nearest one, for some one who was 'chesty'?

    Gro Records

Thanks John! All the details are spot on! The commemorative certificate should do as the MoD already know he was killed in action,. Is the CWGC the commonwealth war graves commission? I am familiar with the procedure for ordering war records from the MoD as I have gone through the process for another ancestor and I am indeed his next of kin. Thanks again.

    Gro Records

Thanks but I have tried the free BMD index but it only covers deaths in GB. My relative was killed in action at El Alamein which is in Egypt not GB and therefore his death does not show up. To order his war record from the MoD, I need to supply a death certificate which I can easily get from GRO as I am registered with them but I need to know the reference data for his death and I can't find it.

    Gro Records

I have been searching Ancestry for a GRO number and reference for the death of John Walter Bird who was killed at El Alamein on the 28th Oct 1942 but cannot find one. I need a death certificate to send for his war record. Any help please?
  11. Thanks. I guess that just about sorts things out. Thanks very much to all contributors!
  12. After talking with family realise that most likely reason for 2 star medals for E Gallagher is that there were 2 E gallaghers! Edward and Ernest - will check out Ernests number but pretty sure this is explanation as Ernest was un married and likely that his medal finished up with his sister- in- law.
  13. Yes this is him. The number you quoted is on one of the star medals. The number on the other one is 12817. The other difference between the star medals is that the one with the latter number has yorks regiment. The other one has yorks and lancs regiment. His service record gives his number on joining in 1914 as 2225 and when asked whether in service previously said yes 5 years.
  14. Try Sheffield indexers. This may tell you if it was an oriental restaurant. I doubt it will record the " knocking shop" facility though.
  15. Just one more point. The two numbers are different. One matches his regimental number, the other doesn't. Anyone know why? Anything to do with a re-numbering exercise? Is it possible to say which medal was the Mons medal and which one was the "pip" medal? Are they different in any way?
