  2. I reckon it is Western Bank, looking down towards Brook Hill. The single storey shops are at the top of Hounsfield Road. From the trams then and now topic:

  3. I personally would rather have what we’ve lost to what we have now, too many flats and apartments, the Peace Gardens have been ruined, it’s now just play area, the well set out flower beds and calm almost serene atmosphere has been lost.

  4. Before the city of Sheffield was redeveloped many times over it was a hustling, bustling cramped city full of buildings that are no longer with us. Thankfully we have way more open space than we used to have. Take a look above - what can you see that is no longer there?

  6. There was a Hillsborough Garage on the corner of Bramall Lane and John Street, it’s still a garage / shop but the Hillsborough name went years ago.

  11. I seem to remember my dad telling me it was so well built some dynamite had to be used, don’t know if that’s true but I’m one of those who believed every word uttered by their fathers.

  12. The Noose and Gibbet was just a bit of clever marketing, it was just a theme pub, unfortunately people believed it was where Spence Broughton was left on the gibbet, nobody really corrected that train of thought, I mean the stories sold beer.

  13. It might be quicker to list what is still there, especially in the foreground! Just about everything in that part of the image has gone, including most of the road layout. It was the Town Hall and the church spires in the upper part of the image which made me realise what I was looking at. What catches my eye is the tall building in the middle of Walker & Hall's factory. How plain it looks despite having been built at a time when tall buildings were usually rather ornate, such as the nearby Town Hall. Come to think of it, how about a factory of that size being in what we now think of as a retail, office and leisure based city centre.

  15. Cossey Road in Burngreave took a direct hit. A part of the road still exists but with no houses left now I think. Victims are buried nearby in Burngreave Cemetery. It must have been particularly terrifying given that most people would have never seen an aircraft before. https://www.picturesheffield.com/frontend.php?keywords=Ref_No_increment;EQUALS;s00146&pos=1&action=zoom&id=4140

  16. Heads-up... new video incoming next Wednesday: The Sheffield Guide to Stoneface's Secret Sculpture Park premieres at 7pm on Wednesday 8 April on YouTube! Filmed last year at Stoneface Creative's beautiful woodland sculpture park, this is one of my favourite videos so far (you'll see why!)... and will hopefully be a nice bit of relaxing escapism for you to watch in the current climate. Set a reminder here: https://sheff.info/stoneface
