  1. I remember kids throwing in plastic money they had stolen from math lessons in those machines. Sometimes washers if you could get hold of them. More money to spend on spice after school.

  2. I don't suppose they were really very fantastic to live in, as detailed maps suggest that they were back to backs. Whilst perusing some old maps to get my bearings (Wincobank not being a part of the city I now very well) I note that between the publication of 25 inch maps in 1905 and 1923 the roads in this area got renamed: School Street became Robin Hood Road Princes Street became Prestwich Street Thomas Street became Tansley Street Victoria Road became Vauxhall Road:

  3. The building is on Shalesmoor and the junction of Shepherd Street, not Matthew Street. Used as an antiques centre, until recently.

  4. Used to buy my sunday papers from there. Had to put all the supplements together with the paper, they were all spread out on the floor. Woman who owned it very scary. Think the Star called her the battling granny after fighting off group of teenagers trying to rob the shop.

  6. I doubt it. Between 1975-6 I worked at Middlesbrough Central Library and we charged 2p a sheet single-sided and 3p double for photocopying. I'd guess the costs of a small bit of cheap paper in a machine with lowish resolution would be significantly less.

  7. The videmat machine on the 20, 33 and 34 from Newfield school photocopied lots of buttons and washers ... allegedly.

  8. They were great for kids, since the fare was only 2p. But I guess the adults used to drop a smaller amount and go a lot further. Mind you the fares were that cheap it wouldn't hardly make a difference! During busy times, the videmat users would get a seat faster than someone needing change, especially if the passengers didn't know the fare, or wanted to know if the bus went to this or that place. They were only used on double door buses, which tended to be selective routes. I don't think the 95 ever had them on for example, but the 2 and 59 outer circular did. I also remember them being broken down a lot.

  9. Yes Videmat machines on double door OMO buses. They would have been OK if people could have been trusted. Unfortunately some passengers put all sort of rubbish in them and we had to frequently radio for the Videmat van to come and unjam them. It was amazing how many passengers would jump up and alight at the site of an inspector at a bus stop that the bus was approaching.

  10. Here's a photo I took whilst experimenting with my camera on an open shutter You'll also find a copy here: http://www.rocknroll.force9.co.uk/cinemas/...o7.html#kingdom I used to frequent the Gaumont a lot towards it's latter years , mainly to use the video library that they installed at the back of the foyer. The Manager at that time was Paul Archer, a smashing fella who loved the building and would tell you all about it. He once took me to the little lane around the back (where the mini in the previous posting was) and pointed out a row of windows that could no longer be looked out of since the stairway behind them had been blocked off during the conversion to multi screens. When the cinema was converted from 1 to 2 screens he pointed out that they had a JCB in the building, digging out to make screen one deeper and that when the 3rd screen was added, an extention was built on the roof which at first wasn't insulated, so in winter the audience froze and in summer it was boiling. He fought to keep the name Gaumont, because the Rank Organisation called the majority of their cinemas "Odeons" and he told them that Sheffielders associated the name "Odeon" with the cinema in Fitzallan Square (which was by now the Top Rank Bingo). I also asked why were they pulling it down, was it due to poor attendances? He said "No. If we get the right films the place would still pack out, but when a development company offers the owners a few million pounds for the site and will incorporate 3 moderns screens into the bargain, how could they refuse?" As I said, a smashing & interesting fella.
