  1. A map (early 1950's) showing where the Dolphin beerhouse was (corner of Summer street and Mushroom Lane)

  2. The licence for the Dolphin beerhouse, Summer street changed hands in 1915 (see 2/3 of way down on the attached) Charles Brearley to Arthur Ellis.

  3. My presumption is that by the 1950's there was little point in referring to a single premises as "76 and 78" as it was by then unlikely that they would be separated into two again.

  6. I reckon you are about bang on there @boginspro. The original snowy scene would almost certainly be the winter of 54/55 and Burtons building is where the blue arrow is, with Syminton and Croft Ltd in between (the upstairs still appears to derelict from the damage caused in the Blitz). The reconstruction of Cockaynes appears to be well advanced, with the facade overlooking Angel Street (which we know as Argos today) Another photo, from the opposite direction, this time in February of 1955, looking back down towards the position of the photographer in the original. Cockaynes is stil, under construction and would be finished during 1955. All the other buildings are as the original, just looking back down Angel Street towards Snig Hill, rather than back up it? Lastly, a modern aerial view, with the approximate position and direction of the original photo, even though little of the original buildings and road layouts remain...

  7. The Ellis Family, circa 1903. The photograph was taken because the last of the Elliott family sisters was leaving Sheffield for Philadelphia. I know there are a number of copies of this picture in circulation and hope to find the owner of the original version at some point.

  8. To Boginspro I'm very new to this kind of research and am trying to piece the scant information I have to try to understand my family's life on Summmer Street before they scattered to the hills of Sheffield and beyond. I think it is more likely that the Dolphin was the beerhouse on Summer Street. My Dad used to tell me tales of his aunts and uncles helping themselves to drinks on the cellar steps. They seemed a lively bunch. Great Grandad Walter is described as a jovial character, a trait that has passed down through the generations. Thanks for your help with this.

  10. Are you sure it was the Dolphin on Edward Street that he ran, his home address seems to suggest it could have been the Dolphin Hotel, Summer Street, which was a beer house and closed 31st December 1923. The Edward Street one is in our pubs list and the Summer Street one is mentioned on a PDF at this link --------- http://www.google.co.uk/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=1&cad=rja&uact=8&ved=2ahUKEwiJnfbdiqzdAhVrI8AKHb7gCQAQFjAAegQICBAC&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.ourbroomhall.org.uk%2Fwp-content%2Fuploads%2F2014%2F12%2FOB_PDF001_OB_List-of-Licensed-Beerhouses-in-Broomhall-c.1870-c.1935-MC.7.1.pdf&usg=AOvVaw2928JaV6CLcbhFAKOX23Kf
