Duncan Gilmour was born in Scotland on the 21st of October 1816. At the age of 16 he moved to Ireland and learnt the trade of wines and spirits. In 1854 he moved to Sheffield where he set up buisness as Duncan & Gilmour and Co. wine & spirit merchants at 56-58 Queen Street which was known as the Murrays Arms. In 1860 he bought premises in Dixon Lane and started brewing in 1884. In 1891 it was registered as a limited company.

In 1883 Duncan Gilmour retired and passed the company to one of his son's who was also named Duncan Gilmour.

On the 11th of January 1889 he died at Sandygate and was buried at christ church, Fulwood in Sheffield.

On London Road down near Albert road there is a bit of a gable end that still has a 'sign' for Gilmours on it I think......is it the same Gilmour?

Steve, You are getting two pubs mixed up here.

The Riverside Court Hotel was the Lion Hotel,2 Nursery St.

The Riverside was The Brown Cow Mowbray St.

Also ,if you look at my photo of The Lodge Inn on Spital Hill you can just make out the Duncan Gilmour sign. All three are in the members gallery.

They most certainly will!

I will add the Broughton Inn to the list, but we already seem to have 'Tap & Barrel' Waingate under its former name

'Bull & Mouth'

Thank you, OLD No.12 and thanks for starting this Topic.

Steve.

I was sat outside The Dog and Partridge on Trippet Lane last night, quaffing a Vimto, when someone happened to see that the green paint was peeling off and that yellow tiles were hidden beneath the paint per The Ship Inn Shalesmoor.Wouldnt the pub look a million times better with its original livery on view?

In March this year, I went to the Churchyard In Fulwood in order to locate the grave of Robert Colver (one part of Jonas & Colver, the Sheffield Steel firm). More or less adjacent to the Colver family grave is that of Duncan Gilmour and his family.

If anyone is interested a descendent of Duncan Gilmour, Mark Bone, has posted some detailed information about the family

http://www.tamarvalley.org/bone/nos/11557738.htm

is for the Sheffield branch

I will add to our list of finds above, (see post 11) sooner than keep repeating it .

Bit better

Ref: this picture but nothing to do with the tram.

On the gable end of one of the buildings on the left - part way up the Moor - is an inclined sign. The top word on the sign would be "Gilmours" and the middle word would be "Windsor".

As for the bottom word(s), this would be "Stouts" although its possible something like "Beers &" preceded it.

Would that be Duncan Gilmours Windsor Ales and Oatmeal Stout (made with the finest Scotch oats) ?

Could be. I never knew about the Oatmeal Stout.

I knew a bit more about Rawson's, who were taken over by Gilmour's sometime in the 1940's. I can't remember when Gilmour's were taken over by Tetley's. 1954-55 perhaps.

I remember the Oatmeal Stout from when I ran errands for the old lady across the road. Two bottles of this stuff was usually on the list and I was always puzzled that they could make booze from what in our house we used to make porridge.

Rawsons were effectively finished when the Luftwaffe flattened their Pond street brewery, but the council had already been after the site for the new Technical College. The Germans did the council a favour that night ;-) and Duncan Gilmours bought up all their trade outlets.

It was 1964 that Tetley's gobbled up Gilmours....according to my source, - at least that was when the company was formally wound up.

What's it called and where is the 'back of beyond' ? he he

Gilmours owned pubs as far afield as Doncaster, Chesterfield and even Caistor in Lincs.

Interesting your grandad's local had separate doors for the tap room and smoke-room/lounge so close together.

It is called the Sportsman. It's on a road parallel with the M1 I think it may be called Blackburn Road - my Grandad worked at Arthur Lees and live on Shiregreen - obviously far too tempting on the long walk home. It runs down from Wincobank to the old Grange Lane Irailway station below Lower Shiregreen. remember going in to 'retrieve' him one day back in the 1970's the rooms on the right had at least a couple of snooker tables in. We knew things were ove when he 'brought his cue home'. :)
