Owlerton Brewery

Cockayne’s Owlerton Brewery

Capel Street/Penistone Road.

Originally owned by John and William Shaw 1845-1855.

Cockayne and Co. ran the brewery until 1899 when it was acquired by Samuel Allsopp of Burton-on-Trent, Allsopp’s resold it (along with fifty public houses) to John Smith’s of Tadcaster.

Trading ceased in 1913 when the brewery was closed and the building demolished.

The Mason’s Arms occupies the brewery site in Capel Street.

Originally St John’s Brewery, George Hartley.

Sold to Robert and John Mellor, Cheese factors of Alsager, Cheshire and to Francis Henry Chambers, Sheffield brewer.in 1857.

Sold to Francis Hooson (corn factor) and Charles Smithh Hooson (maltster), both from Worksop May 18th 1865.

The company later ran the Whitehouse Brewery in Whitehouse Lane. This had belonged to Micah Gould & Co. – it was later run by Mrs Elizabeth Gould.

Hooson’s also operated the Union Malt Kiln at Worksop.

the Durham Ox, 15 Cricket Inn Road was one of Hooson’s thirty one tied houses.

Parkside Brewery

60 Blast Lane/Sussex Street

John Roper (1849 62 Effingham Street) was probably of Roper and Kirby, the originators of the Wards Brewery.

Roper on his own moved to 60 Blast Lane – buy 1859 Matthew Wilson was in charge; he had a tied house the Horse and Groom, London Road (March 1860)

The sons of Matthew Wilson, John Roper Wilson and Joseph William Wilson in charge by 1876.

The Wilson’s acquired the Wicker Brewery from William Willmott in January 1885 and leased it out to the Victoria Vinegar Company.

June 1897 Wilson Brothers’ Parkside Brewery Ltd. Registered. John Roper Wilson retired to Abbeydale House.

1900 Hooson’s taken over by Whitmarsh, Watson.

Pond Street Brewery

Thomas Rawson & Company

Pond Street Brewery.

Founder in 1758 by Thomas Rawson (anti-slavery, lobby for universal suffrage, Hospital trustee.

1780 new brewery built. Rawson in partnership with Wheat, Eyre and Dr Brown. Porter was made here; the first brewing outside London.

Rawson lived at Wardsend House, Wadsley Bridge and died there 24th March 1828, aged 78 (which makes him 8 years old when he formed the brewery !!!)

His Sister, Hannah Rawson passed over the Pond Street Brewery to Thomas Birks; from 1844 Birks and Co. owned Thomas Rawson and Co.

Thomas Birks entered into partnership with Samuel Vickers (of Cadeby Hall, near Doncaster)

January 1855 Thomas Rawson Barker, brass merchant, offered 24 public houses to the Pond Street Brewery.

November 1864 Thomas Birks succeeded by Edward Vaughan Birks.

E V Birks entered into partnership with Henry Simpson.

1862 rebuild of the brewery premises.

16th January 1874 death of Edward Vaughan Birks.

Henry Simpson and a sleeping partner, Charles Elam (Harley Street, London)

January 1897 Thomas Rawson and Company Ltd registered.

1938 Plans for redevelopment of the site as a technical college; December 1940 saw the destruction of much of the brewery; the site now occupied by Polytechnic/University buildings.
