I grew up at Lane End in the 70s. Never knew that the Barrel was originally there, before being presumably knocked down and rebuilt 20-30 yards further back from the road. 

It's position in this photo was, when I was a kid, and still is (judging from Google Streetview), a triangular strip of waste ground.
