  3. Tinsley Rolling Mills would regularly allow a man to the Clubs back entrance for jugs of beer on hot Summer afternoons……..all of which stopped when orange flavoured saline drink was provided by the Company after a few workers were breathalysed on their way home at the end of the 6 to 2 shift. .The local BISAKTA union branch had their annual dinner there ,when Tinsley Directors and senior staff were guests of honour . That apart, I know nothing about the Club. I wonder does anyone know any more?

    Plumpers Hotel

The (old) Plumpers Hotel sited at the junction with Bawtry Road was rather a sharp turn and I remember as a child when travelling in the car with my parents, my mother always used to pipe up with a very nervous, "Careful Bob! it's a bad turning." which made me duck down in the back seat in fear of impending doom. In later years I don't think that turning was as nerve wracking as turning off Tinsley Roundabout when drivers realise they're in the wrong lane for Bawtry Road and others are gathering speed for the M1 slipway. Or coming from Bawtry Road drivers who think they can slip into the traffic on the island. After the demise of the steelworks in the area during the 1980's and being in rather an isolated position the Plumpers experienced a big fall off in trade and closed.

    Woodthorpe Colliery

Mansfield Road fire station was built in 1963. They cut the top off the tip to make a base. Some of the waste I think was put on the other side of the road to make it higher than it was. There was a tunnel under Mansfield road to the other side. That place, where the TA centre is, was in fact coke ovens. The rest of the tip was pulled down the hill and flattened by huge earth moving excavators in the 1960's. Big, MASSIVE trucks with big wheels and huge scraping buckets on the back. Something like this:

    The Meeting

This photograph some years ago was a Picture Sheffield "Unidentified Group Photograph" couldn't remember whether it was a Sheffield group or not. I've searched for the image with every keyword I can think of to no avail. It's not under "Sorby" but you have the knowledge of your grandfather in the photo and the connection to the Sorby. Its possible it could have been deleted from Picture Sheffield but if I do find it again I'll pass on the information. Which one is he? Can you name any of the other members?

    '! RELOCATION NOTICE !'

Hello everyone. The little Ponies are doing great, enjoying being fed on our home grown hay. The poorly lambs we had in last year, are now well, contented, happy sheep, who's coats we will shear in summer. And although we have 'resident' small dogs, others that are coming in to us, are finding 'Happy Homes'. Thank you to the good people who kindly support our work. It is much appreciated, Bless you 🤍

More names to remember for a Sheffield 5 lad. Charlie Rothery the fishmonger was married to my Dads cousin…but we usually bought our fish from Wilds on theGennel. Mc Cartins hairdressers had a pretty daughter, Linda, with whom I went to Hucklow Rd school. Sadly, Linda died a few years after taking the 11 plus.

I well remember the sawdust on the floor of Sam Watsons…to soak up any blood from the meat hanging on hooks on a rail…but can’t remember any at Friederichs ..from where we bought our bacon and the best pork pies this side of the Urals…..especially at Christmas when they needed ordering in advance.

Ponytail, I definitely remember that experience as a very small child, from shopping with my Mum at Firth Park in the early sixties! I hated the smell of the raw meat and the strange (to me) sawdusted floors of the two butchers (Friedrich and Watson)... so I used to wait outside. They had pottery pigs and cows in the window display. I asked Mum why those pot animals were there, and that was my introduction to the reality of where meat actually came from. I was mortified and have never eaten it knowingly ever since!!
  26. Posting this for no other reason than I am having a clear out and this is going. That night, I was commuting back home after a 12-hr day shift. Had a small radio with me & seem to remember I had just arrived at London Bridge station on final whistle! Note the Leeds scorers.
