Guest Laurence Bush
Hello Everyone!! I'm a student at California State University at Long Beach and I'm writing my master's degree thesis about Sheffield novelist Robert Murray Gilchrist (1867-1917). The Sheffield City Library has been very helpful, sending me 500 pages of Gilchrist letters and manuscripts, but I still don't have many biographical details about him. He was written up in Clarence Daniels book, Hugh Walpole''s "The Apple Tree", Arthur Mee's book on English writers and a few other scattered places. If anyone has knowledge of Gilchrist's life and work, please contact me through this forum or directly through me email address at laurence.bush@gmail.com. I'm am happy for the opportunity to participate in the Sheffield forum and have already found many of the posting quite interesting. No one can claim to be a true anglophile without knowing about Sheffield!

RichardB
Cartledge Hall at Holmesfield is a gabled asymmetrical Elizabethan and part Jacobean farmhouse. It was reputedly built in 1492 although the majority of the building is late 16th and early 17th century. This weather-beaten old house was home to the Wolstenholme family and has panelled rooms and secret recesses. Sir John Wolstenholme was a merchant adventurer and founder of the Virginia Company. He helped fit out the ill-fated expedition of Henry Hudson, and the family was to be immortalised by Baffin on his maps with the naming of the inhospitable Wolstenholme Island. Robert Murray Gilchrist who died in 1917 also lived for a while at Cartledge Hall in Holmesfield. The Derbyshire novelist who was born in Sheffield in 1868 wrote many romantic novels set in the 18th century. He had many writer friends who he invited to stay at the hall and to join him on walks in the Peak District. When he died suddenly in his prime, this very popular man had a huge funeral including a contingent of Belgian refugees to whom he had been very kind. They found their way to this remote village to pay tribute. He was buried in Holmesfield churchyard with a memorial inside to his memory. http://www.peakdistrictonline.co.uk/conten...categoryId=2222 http://wakefield.110mb.com/history/26486-h/26486-h.htm
Guest holmesfield-boy
I live in Holmesfield over the fields from Cartledge Hall (now occupied by Mr. Yorkshire Crisps!) and am very interested in Holmesfield's 2 famous former residents(*) - RMG and Edward Carpenter who must have been associates. Is there any more info to add, please? (*3 if you include G.H.B. Ward)
