MIr. Vernon Blackburn prosecuted ; Mr. Waddy defended Hawley, and Mr. Forbes defended Glover. Mr. Armfield, the landlord of the Adelphi public-house, in Sheffield, had £122. 10s. 9d. in casb, notes, and checks in a drawer in his bedroom on the first floor. He had seen his moneysafe during the day, and at half-past 8 o'clock the drawer containing the money and the room door were both locked. Shortlv afterwards the room door was found broken open from the outside, a false slide on the top of the drawer removed, and all the money gone. The window of the room was partly open, and the looking glass which usuaUy stood in front of the window was lying upon the bed. The two prisoners were spoken to as being in the house at the time in question. A football club meeting and an election dinner had been held in the house upon the ground floor - but the prisoners were said to have gone upstairs alone and had two glasses of sherry there, and afterwards to have come downstairs together. No one else was upstairs with them at the time. Haiwley had been employed as a painter to paint the room where the money was kept. None of the property was ever found. The theory of the prosecution was that the two prisoners broke into the room and took the money, which was contained in bags; that they then let it down through the window to an accomplice, and then came down stairs. The theory of the defence was that some other person might have been concealed in one of the upstairs rooms, have broken into the room and taken the money, and escaped through the window, without having any connexion with the prisoners. For Hawley the defence was that he was never there at all, and witnesses were called to prove an alibi. For Glover the defence was that the only evidence against him was that he was there with other persons. The jury found hoth the prisoners Guilty. Glover, who had been twice previously convicted for felony, and against whom there was another indictment for burglary, made an appeal to the Court for mercy. His LORDSHIP sentenced him to penal servitude for ten years. Hawley, who had not been previously convicted, wes sentenced to penal servitude for five years. Henry Sampson, landlord was also a famous cricketer. Henry Sampson a prominent player in the north of England, played in the Sheffield area with great success. He was born at Hallam, near Sheffield, on March 13, 1813. A short, stout man, under 5' 6" in height, he was a fine scientific batsman, playing back entirely, with a straight bat. He was a useful bowler and fielded generally at long-stop. Anexcellent single-wicket player he was engaged in various contests with success. His first single-wicket match was in 1832, which was also the first game in which his name appears, when only 19 years old. His greatest success in these matches came in 1841, when he defeated Thomas Marsden, the former champion of England, who though past his prime was still an excellent batsman, by an innings and 50 runs. Sampson's first full season was in 1838 and by 1840 he was chosen to represent the North against Marylebone at Lord's. In 1841 he was engaged, for a short time, at Lord's and was selected for England against Kent on two occasions. By 1842 he removed to Reading where he kept an inn but in 1844 he returned to the north playing in all the important matches for his town and county. On December 4, 1848, he was presented with a silver cup by his cricketing admirers of Sheffield. He played for the United England Eleven for whom he scored well on occasions. In later years he was `mine host' of the Adelphi Hotel in Sheffield. He died on March 29, 1885. The old place was kept for many years by an old lady called Trickett who I believe lived into her nineties and resented any thought of change.
