Something that is possibly not all that well known is that despite being closed a train for London Kings Cross called at Sheffield Vctoria station during the Summers of 1971 and 1972.  The purpose of the call was to change trainmen.  Within the Penistone's Passenger Train Highlights - since 1964 haulage highlights feature on the RCTS website is a page about this train. Just added, with permission of the KDH Collection, is a picture of the train during its call at Sheffield Victoria.  This is the only picture I have ever seen of this train in the Sheffield area.

I've heard the line referred to as the Mucky, Slow and Lazy Railway.

Running over several days it gives detail of preparations as well as vivid details of the two day visit by The Prince and Princess of Wales (16th and 17th August 1875.) 

 

I'm sure someone will know what Locomotive it was in the Station.

Information from M. Simmons who worked at Rotherwood from 1966-1980: Engine driver, W. Hibberd of Rotherwood Electric Depot probably waiting to work either the 21-45 or 22-45 Sheffield to Manchester electric passenger.

Our annual visit to my mothers relations in Grimsby always involved a trip ,on a Friday night ,to leave our luggage at the station via the lift from the tram stop in the Wicker! Happy Days!

You could get from Sheffield Victoria to Manchester in under an hour.

These days:

The average journey time by train between Sheffield and Manchester is 1 hour and 9 minutes.

That’s when we had an organisation investing in electrification of a major route…especially of freight. Sadly, they picked a system which was rapidly being outdated by AC and there was no will or money to bring the route up to the new standard…and, in any case, the old GCR route was doomed by the powers in Derby.

Another case of our City’s transport connections being neglected by national and local politicians….although we did manage to be connected to the M1 but electrification of the Midland rail route to London won’t happen, methinks, in my lifetime.

Somebody posted a link to the Newspaper archive the other day. So I looked up the station on it. There were several reports of part of the roof of the station collapsing, I think it was around 1951. Nobody was hurt, and no trains were under where it fell. I could only see the references to the articles, having no access to the papers themselves.
