Went to Eckington today and had cause to pass what was the Prince of Wales Pub and I spotted this informative sign on the wall above the door but I don't know what it indicates, anyone have any idea what it points to?

6 hours ago, History dude said:

Presumably an early fire hydrant sign the distance to it?

That was my first thought but what's the significance of the "V".

anyone else having problems posting ?

for what it's worth, this is what I was trying to post on Wednesday:

I'd say it's something similar to a Fire Hydrant

I initially thought it might be V for Vent as in sewer vent, but then I found this website (scroll down near the bottom) which suggests it could be an old Fire Hydrant sign or maybe a Valve for the water main
