Across from the Hillsborough ground on Penistone Rd looking up at the side of the Five Arches there is a sort of cliff face It has always intrigued me, maybe because I think it belongs in a Western film, I would guess its Sandstone, I could be wrong.

What is it and what era please?

I think you are right and it is a sandstone rock outcrop. Which means it was from the time when it was Sheffield by the Sea! Sand being an ancient sea bed.

It belongs to the underlying lower Pennine coal measures which consist of mudstones ,siltstones, sandstones and coal. Sheffield has one of the most diverse geologies of any UK cities.
