tozzin
Has anyone any idea just which house was Brewer William Stones on Clarkehouse Road, in the 1879 directory it says, Newbould Lane shoots off Clarkehouse Road then listed on Clarkehouse Road is Mr John Hill then William Stones followed by Abraham Brooksbank, the next road is Westbourne Road East. I find it a bit confusing as there's more than three properties from Newbould Lane to what is now Westbourne Road, Stones home is listed as Ashgrove along with the other three men I've mentioned. I do know that a large chimney did or does stand in Stones garden that was to heat his greenhouse.
Edmund
Ash grove appears to be the correct residence for Mr Stones (see 1893 Kellys entry below). The 1890 map shows the area, with lots of new building around the time so it's difficult reconciling census. directory and maps at different dates. And Google street view shows that the chimney is still in place at the rear of Ash grove. The details of the sale of various property following William Stones' death were printed in the Sheffield Evening Telegraph in 1895: And from 1871, sale details of the house before Mr Stones bought it:
tozzin
I've found the house, I've photographed it also the Greenhouse chimney, which is still serving a purpose by burning garden waste.
