A few of the obvious ones to get the list going...

The Who - Sunday 30th May 1965

Small Faces - Sunday 21st August 1966

Jimi Hendrix Experience - Sunday 8th January 1967

Pink Floyd - Sunday 7th May 1967

Amen Corner - Sunday 17th September 1967

Stevie Wonder (Billed as 'Little Stevie Wonder') - Sunday 8th October 1967

...I hadn't noticed they were all Sundays before. Was Sunday the live night at the Mojo then?

And the King Mojo Festival Number 1, headlined by The Small Faces took place on Monday 3rd June 1968... but in Leeds!

Sundays was a day in which clubs could get a cheaper rate from bands in those days, as they would very often be travelling from a Saturday gig to a Monday gig. So they were sort of fill ins for a bit of extra readies!

All Dayer sessions were when bands played during the day rather than at night so were more readily available for a good price. Same with All Nighters, when again groups would be able to play at more (un)normal hours rather than during ordinary concert times.

Some groups did play mid week at the Mojo occasionally, but most of the mid week gigs were usually record sessions. Friday to Sunday were more likely to be live sessions.

..there's no way The Troggs would have played at the Mojo. I remember Pete playing "wild thing" as punishment if he thought we weren't dancing enough......

I remember Pete Stringfellow asked me to have my photo taken with Sonny Boy Willamson for a Sheffield newspaper (can't remember which one) but, living in Wakefield, I never got to see it in print. Can anyone help me trace that event? I went to Mojo regularly between 1964/5 and 1967.

Rufus Thomas

Long John Baldry (with Rod Stewart)

Didn't see Rufus Thomas at the Mojo although like most groups we performed his song 'Walking The Dog'

We did get to see Rufus Thomas in a blues club in Nashville in 1998, he was 82 years old by then, his first song that night was 'Walking The Dog'.

There's a street named after him in Memphis 'Rufus Thomas Boulevard'.

Did see Baldry and Stewart though.

That would be interesting to hear. What year was that from?

I also have a copy of the EP, the front and back of the sleeve are shown below. I could also attach an MP3 file of the EP itself, but I don't know if that would be allowed. Maybe someone can provide an opinion on that.

Regards,

IR

Looks like Booby Nutt on the cover of the EP. I saw the Byrds or Birds at the Mojo along with all the artists mentioned but I cannot imagine why we used to wear pacamacs.......

Apart from all the well-known bands and artists who appeared at the Mojo there is one band which never gets a mention, for various reasons.

That band was Who's Who?

At the time Who's Who? comprised Lew Weston, Mal Trippett, Eric Wells and myself, Zeke Fisher and Mal Trippett knew Reuben Mooney, the owner of the Tower Ballroom as the Mojo was previously known.

We were allowed by Mr Mooney to use the ballroom as a rehearsal room.

It wasn't very long before Pete Stringfellow heard of this and approached Mr Mooney with an offer we couldn't equal.

The rest is history.

Anyone know the details on this earlier (than 67) King Mojo rag record: artists & tracks ????

I guess it's the 45 from 1965 that features 2 'beat group' tracks .......

The Lizards -- My Love Goes On

The Foresters -- Travel On

The Lizards track is up on youtube ... can't say its to my taste.

Guest Statesider

Hello from the States!

I am attempting to cull data specific to the band Bluesology, Elton John (as Reg Dwight)'s original band, who played on their own as well as in support of acts like Long John Baldry, Major Lance, The Isley Brothers, Doris Troy and Patti LaBelle, etc. from 1965 to 1968.

If anyone might have details on actual Mojo Club gig dates for Bluesology, and/or know where I might find copies of show adverts or venue flyers, that would be most helpful.

And the Wilson Pickett show has been mentioned here already. Might we be able to unearth an actual gig date for that?

Many thanks!

Thanks PFN for the list of acts who appeared at the Mojo.

I never went to the club itself - but I was at that 1967 City Hall fund-raising gig. I was still in the sixth form at school and, apart from seeing a couple of local pop groups attempting to play covers of recent hits in draughty church halls, it was the first gig I had ever been to. I was very excited. My pal Jon Haworth had occasional work as a steward at the City Hall (as in showing people to seats etc, not bouncer!) and he got me on the payroll for that evening. It was a fantastic atmosphere and the place was packed, when the headliners "The Drifters" came on, about a hundred of the audience ended up dancing on stage with them (including, I am ashamed to admit, me).

A couple of comments on the line-up which you mention: The Pitiful were, I'm sure, called "The Pitiful Souls". A group called The Trends were also on the bill - they stood out because they were a guitar band, not a soul band. Finally, "The Drifters" were not the real ones - they toured as "The Original Drifters" and included one previous Drifters member, bass singer Bill Pinkney.

Jon and I went backstage and met Stringfellow, who was friendly, and "The Drifters" who were charming and autographed a record for me. I have been to many hundreds of gigs since but I'll never forget that one.

Regarding my post above, I recently found out that the singer of The Alan Bown Set at that time was Jess Roden, who became moderately famous under his own name in the 1970s. Alan Bown was the bandleader and trumpeter. I discovered this when doing a bit of internet research after I had bought a copy of their really very good cover of Edwin Starr's song 'Headline News'. Jess has another connection with Sheffield - he was one of the first to record the song 'You Can Leave Your Hat On' which, 20 years later, appeared in the Sheffield-based film The Full Monty. In between times another Sheffielder, Joe Cocker, had also recorded a version of the song, though the one in the film was sung by Tom Jones.
