Crucible Theatre Sheffield.jpg

Great photo here of the site of The Crucible Theatre before it was built in Sheffield.

An old carpark can be seen along with some of the old slum housing and workhouses still to be knocked down

An old hotel stood on this site back in the day too where Sheffield Wednesday was founded so a very historical site

Plenty of history here

The Hotel you refer to was the Adelphi.

And wasn't  Yorkshire County Cricket Club  founded  there aswell?

Yes that's correct.

Great photo !   Pity the Adelphi had to go, it would be a right place of pilgrimage for Owls today!

I've been on many occasions but I don't like the Crucible much. However it can't be denied that it's been an asset to Sheffield.

Great picture. How is that picture orientated please? Where would Norfolk St or Arundle Gate be in relation to that photo?

Im guessing the photo is orientated similar to this one, with Norfolk St and the Sheffield Club being the main building centre left?

Yes, you are right, the original photo was looking almost due North from an elevated position above the junction of Arundel Street and Arundel Lane. Cars are parked on Milk Street from its junction with Norfolk Street at the back of the Odeon whilst the former Sycamore Street ran left to right across approximately the centre of the photograph. The 1/1250 map 4 helps.

Came across this photo, whilst browsing through the book 'Sheffield - Emerging City' and remembered the post from last month. The narrative has some dates of both the formations of YCCC and SWFC

The picture showing the construction site is looking toward Angel Street with the modernistic chimney stack of the "new" Market immediately behind the large windowless brick building. This was the ODEON cinema...completed in the 1960's after being left as a steel frame after all work on it was stopped on account of the War.

Also formed there, 150 years ago this week on 6 March 1867 was the Sheffield Football Association which is now known as the Sheffield & Hallamshire CFA.

There was a blue plaque on the Crucible which stands on the spot of were the Adelphi Hotel stood to mark the fact that Sheffield Wednesday, Yorkshire Cricket Club and Bramall Lane Cricket ground where founded there. Not sure if it is still there. A picture of the plaque can be found on the Picture Sheffield site

Think it's on a building opposite St Marie's.
