Radford Place "Bank"

Hi All,

I'm researching some family (Thomas Hancock) who lived in Radford Place Bank in the 1841 Census. I note Radford Place has been queried before and I understand it does not exist now, but my question is what does the "Bank" part of place called "Radford Place Bank" mean?

Many thanks

David

I hope this series of maps help. In 1823 Radford Place doesn't exist, but it shows the steep bank which it will ascend.  The 1838 map shows Radford Place and the layout of the houses at the top of the bank in the gardens.  The "To Let" advert from 1857 gives details of a house next door to Radford House, being let by William Hancock - one of yours? - if so that may pinpoint it. There was a William Hancock 2 years younger than your Thomas, possibly a brother?, living at Daisy Bank in 1851

Edmund,

This answers the question about the "Bank" and gives me another thread to follow-up!

Thanks
