On this day the town was visited by a dreadful storm of wind, during which, the slates were torn from the roofs, and scattered through the streets with such violence that it was perilous to pass them. A stack of chimneys in St. James' Street, fell through the roof of an adjoining house, and overwhelmed a bed from which four persons had just risen. A sheet of lead,was precipitated from the flat roof of the Tontine, into the yard, immediately after the Doncaster mail coach had set out, and upon the very spot where it had stood. Many chimney pipes were destroyed, casements blown out, signs carried off, and decayed buildings shaken to pieces. A child was crushed to death at Sheffield-moor, by a falling wall. Two trees by the river side, near the Nursery, were torn up by the roots, and laid across the road. In the Wicker, three high chimneys at Mr. Dixon's silver refinery were laid to the ground.

Joseph Hunter, antiquarian, was born on 6 February 1783 in Sheffield, the son of a cutler. Educated at Attercliffe, he later studied theology at New College in York, becoming a Unitarian Minister in Bath in 1809. He never again lived in South Yorkshire though often returned in the course of his researches into the area.

Famous Sheffield United goalkeeper, William 'Fatty' Foulkes" died on this day in 1916. He made 299 appearances for United and one England cap. He is buried in Burngreave cemetery.

Sheffield Wednesday footballer Tom Brittleton played his last game for Wednesday on this day at the age of 38. Winning 5 England caps, he played 343 games for Wednesday scoring 30 goals.

Joseph Pointer born in Attercliffe. Chair of Sheffield Trades Council he was elected a Cllr for Brightside in 1908. In 1909 he succesfully contested Brightside in a Parliamentary by election and became Sheffield's first Labour MP. He died at the early age of 39 in 1914.

Botanical Gardens

In 1833 the Sheffield Botanical and Horticultural Society was formed to promote both healthy recreation and self-education, through the development of a botanical garden. A period of fundraising followed and the land was purchased. In 1834, the Society appointed Robert Marnock, gardener of Bretton Hall, Wakefield (now the Yorkshire Sculpture Park), to design the Gardens and act as their first Curator. He laid out the Gardens in the then highly fashionable Gardenesque style, where each plant was displayed to perfection in scattered plantings. The Gardens were finally opened on the 29th and 30th June, and 4th and 5th July, 1836, when more than 12,000 people visited. The Gardens were only open to the general public on four Gala days per year; otherwise admission was limited to shareholders and annual subscribers. 29th/30th June and 4th/5th July

Charles Frederick Crisp (January 29, 1845 – October 23, 1896) was a United States political figure. A Democrat, he was elected as a Congressman from Georgia in 1882, and served until his death in 1896. From 1890 until his death, he was leader of the Democratic Party in the House, as either the House Minority Leader or the Speaker of the House. He was also the father of Charles R. Crisp who also served in Congress.
