"The Playground in the Sky"

There once was a playground in the sky, what was all that about ? Where/what was it ? Did the pupils wear a uniform ? etc etc blah blah

For advanced students, where did the educational establishment relocate to ? Where did the stone come from that was used to build their new building ? What gap did it create ?

I'll find one yet that stumps you ! This seems a marvelous resource and a body of considerable knowlege...

The site is only as good as the members who join and contribute !

We've not been going long but already the community is growing and people are coming forward with some terrific information and memories..

The stinker comment was meant as a compliment, you've done a great job so far !

Just wait for my George Arthur Brant posting, you'll love that one ... origins back in the 1980's - the question that is, the answer eludes us ... had us searching for a combined total of 30 years.

That's a very cryptic set of clues. Haven't been in Sheffield for 10 years, but if I said Broomhill, would I be on the right track?

Central Sheffield, VERY, VERY central, couldn't be more central if it tried. That's very near the middle hahahahaha East Parade - strong hint ... Blue Coats ... another VERY strong hint

Christ - I'm so stuck you couldn't be any more stuck if you stuck me to something with something very sticky until I was well and truly stuck

I think you are referring to the Blue Coat School which was on the East

> Parade in the Centre of the town. In 1911 a new building was erected at

> Psalter Lane and the pupils removed there from their original building.

Can't do anymore searching, continue tomorrow.

Congratulation Tsavo and the second part of the question, God I'm a hard taskmaster aren't I ?

Really well done, even I would struggle to find that, and I already knew the answer !

Tsavo is a researcher from heaven !

Then George Arthur should give Tsavo a good challenge, its bested us, the whole family since 1982, it's the one big missing fact - I know I haven't posted it yet, saving it for a rainy day

I'm sure you already know all the facts about the Blue Coat school, but for those who don't I would recommend reading this:

(someone did a lot of work on this piece and it deserves reading in full)

Now, let me ask a question back.

Which other Sheffield school had a 'playground in the sky'?

I have as possibilities "The Childrens Hospital", maybe 25-30 years ago; and Meadow Nursery, off Da Parkway (recent, I've been away since 1981, that could mean anything). I'm not aware of any School, thanks for the question, you got me beat there

The other school to have a rooftop play area was Broomhill Infants School. Am saying this with crossed fingers as the school's prospectus makes no mention of it today. Hope someone can confirm this as I remember seeing children playing up there from the top of the 52!

My two answers came from my Sister, Childrens Hospital from approx 30 years ago; Meadow Nusery quite recent.

The question beat me completely, and I can't even see in my minds eye, the School pictured.

Nice work; asking questions, causes scratching of the head, deep thought, and ultimately, premature baldness - Cheers

I'm hoping someone can confirm this, Richard, if only to confirm I didn't dream it! The School is situated on Beech Hill Road, at the junction with Newbould Lane. The reason I remember it so well is I'm terrified of heights and always thought "rather them than me!" Don't remember your examples though.

confirming Richard B's options ...but then i would as his sister ...

I used to take both my boys now 30 + 24 up onto the top of childrens hospital when they were little where they had a playroom / creche ...as a Childcare worker i always check out play space so i can pinch a few ideas .....The roof area was covered with tough netting a bit like tennis courts and the children would go out there on bikes etc ...mine loved it and it always made a difficult visit to the hospital a nice experience as well.

Re 2nd its the MEGA nursery a community non for profit nursery based in the MEGA centre on Bernard Road the huge old factory just before the bridge .also has soft play area / cafe/ conference suite/ youth space and much more

ofsted report

Mega Nursery is a community nursery, which opened in January 2003. It Is accommodated in The Mega Centre, which is a large community centre linked to the Hope City Church, in the east side of Sheffield. The building is a refurbished disused factory

There is a secure outdoor roof play space.

Thanks Zoro, always good to be brought up to date about the City. Getting children in the fresh air is great, even if they no longer have the freedoms that we had. If no-one's said it already, welcome to the site!
