Bayleaf
As many of you will know, the Shepherd Wheel has been badly neglected for many years. In particular the dam leaks like a sieve, and the wheel itself has been rotting away. At last there is a project to restore the wheel to working condition again. This will require a lot of fundraising, but for every £1 raised, £9 will be forthcoming from various agencies. The total cost is predicted to be in the region of £900,000. Some of the fundraising is being undertaken by Friends of the Porter Valley, who have a target of £20,000 to raise over the next year. One of the ways you could help is by giving your nearest and dearest five buckets of water for Christmas/ their birthday! To run the wheel and machinery in demonstrations for a week would take around 180,000 litres of water, which is by a strange coincidence around 20,000 bucketsful. (See the connection folks?) So for a donation of £5 you get a card to send with the message 'Someone's bought you 5 buckets of water!' Anyone interested can download an order form from www.sheffieldportervalley.org.uk. And a Happy Christmas to all!

Ponytail
Apparently it had also been restored 1960 by Sheffield Junior Chamber of Commerce. https://www.picturesheffield.com/frontend.php?keywords=Ref_No_increment;EQUALS;s00031&pos=1&action=zoom&id=4063 Opened as a museum in 1962. Reponsibility for it was taken over by Sheffield Industrial Museums Trust in 1998.
