Not seen a shot like this before. The wonderful view of Blackburn meadows.

Hadfields East Hecla works where Meadowhall now stands. I'll never forget those gas tanks though more cooling towers to the right of the viaduct than I remember.

Great pic - but made me think....

wonderful as the viaduct is in providing an overpass/underpass to relieve the traffic - I just spotted the streets in the Lower Left hand corner of the pic going across the picture simply cut in half by the motorway (looked on the map and they are now called Siemans Close and Newburn Drive) - and how that community was simply destroyed - having been bought up on terraced streets like that I know how, in the main, 'everyone knew evryone else' and how close a street community was - I cannot see that returning once the diggers have gone.

Sorry I am rambling but it just struck me seeing the obvious cut like that

I have seen another interesting picture of the viaduct a while back which I'll have to try and find.

It was taken at the north end of the bridge on the Sheffield side and showed the works railway they had set up to help build it.

There appeared to be a train running on the bottom deck of the bridge but it came off near the north end to where the crane where set up to haul stuff up..

Will try to find it a pop back in a mo....

I'm back *wipes brow*

Gor blimey.

Never mind the crappy picture I had, look at this.......

I remember standing by the wall on old Sheffield Road opposite the PostOffice and seeing the viaduct "creeping" across the valley. I recall it looked so sinister

I was at Hinde House Comprehensive school from Sep 1965 - Dec 1969 and can well remember looking out across the valley and watching the viaduct slowly making its way across. My Uncle Ted worked on the viaduct at the time.

With regards to your photograph of Blackburn Meadows, does anyone have any photos of Meadowhall Farm which used to sit where the large roundabout is now. My grandparents used to live there until the 1920's.

Hi John

It would be better if you put a new post in the main section asking about this - I'm sure someone can help

John, I presume you mean the roundabout at the bottom of Meadowhall Rd as I have 1905 maps of the Plumpers roundabout end and I cannot see a farm. Rotherham Library has maps of this area from 1905. They may have photo,s.

This 1930'ish map shows Meadowhall farm,

I also came across ...

Grayson Wright, farmer, Meadow Hall farm, Blackburn. 1925.

Here are a few pictures of the construction. I remember watching the viaduct being built from my friends backyard in Tinsley
