Deighton Motor Company

Deighton Motor Co. sold mainly commerical vehicles of all types. I should know where they were located but can't for the life of me remember.

Can anybody enlighten me?

I keep confusing them with the Lodestar Motor Company. Another old timer in the motoring world. Lodestar used to be in a building on Effingham Road, just beyond the gas works. It stood back from the road on a bit of a rise and had two very big wooden doors with curved tops. That particular building was still there a couple of years ago when I did the Five Weirs Walk.

Lodestar moved out of there in the early 1960's, into a new building at the corner of Johnson Street and Stanley Street. That went a while ago to make way for the New relief Road in the Wicker area.

Regards

I seem to remember there being Pickford Deighton garage at the top of Fitzwilliam St (late 70's), just below the Raven/Hornblower.

Also, the Renault dealer on Ecclesall Rd, previously was George Kennings (GK Ford) was that a Pickford deighton Dealership before that.

I very rarely went down Attercliffe so wasn't familiar with the Old Hall Road site. This must have been where they sold and serviced commercial vehicles .

Deighton Motor's at Ellin St was what I kept remembering. Then I kept dismissing the notion as absurd, for there was another car dealer on the same street already, called Batty. I kept confusing them.

Batty were agents for Lanchester and possibly Singer. That is before Lanchester went out of business and Singer was absorbed into the Rootes Group (Humber and Hillman). Once part of Rootes, Singer's were sold by Pickford's on Ecclesall Road, next door to what used to be known as the Nursery Tavern.

As you know, Ellin Street was very short - only running from the end of Hereford Street out onto the Moor. Suprising it could be home to two motor dealers.

Regards

PS.

Does anybody remember a business on the corner of Ellin Street and Hereford Street that sold farm equipment? Usually implements in the showroom window but sometimes the odd tractor. They never seemed to do much in the way of business and eventually disappeared long before that whole area was redeveloped. I remember it because I was a frequent rider on the Graves Park/Petre Street bus. This used to stop right outside the showroom door.

Deighton Motors became Pickford Deighton along with E H Pickfords about 1977/8, it was part of T W Wards Group. PICKFORD Deighton on Eccleshall Road ceased trading about 1982/3. Pickford Deighton on Ellin Street moved about 1990 somewhere around London Road /Abbeydale Road. Old Hall Road site was a Dodge and Commer dealership lorries/vans ect.

I know this is not part of the original discussion but was this particular showroom opposite the end of Devonshire Street and stood back from the regular property line ?

If my memory isn't playing tricks again, there used to be a company at that location called Freeman Oaks and they were the Austin dealership.

Kennings used to be the Morris, Wolesey, dealers but when the Austin merged with Morris to form British Motor Corp. (c1952) one of them had to go and thats how Kennings ended up with the showroom.

I think Neville Watts also used to be somewhere around there - before they moved to West Street?

I thought this used to be Kennings.

You can still see the "Drive in and Drive out" entrance and exit.

There was also another old Reanault dealer in the area you used to live in with SteveHB when you were at the Rodley Inn.

This is Holmes & Younie, Renault dealers.

Its a previously unposted picture from my December 1974 collection.

Taken from the bottom of Granville Road opposite its Junction with Shrewsbury Road.

Holmes and Younie appear to be on Suffolk Road.

Picture may be OK for a then and now as long as you don't get run over by the Supertram while trying to take it.

A good historic photo Dave, just to the right of the tall lampost at the left side of the photo is the chimney of the Rodley Inn.

From the location I would say you have just come out of the urinal at the bottom of Shrewsbury Rd.

Best match I can get on Google Street.

Seems that the new owners of this site have dropped Renault in favour of Mercedes

I think this also previously unused picture may be from a similar viewpoint but slightly further up Granville Road.

That should reduce the risk of being hit by a Supertram when doing a then & now

This second picture appears to have been taken in 1970 so is even older than the first one

Would you believe it.

There are more crane jibs in the old photo than there are in the new one!! :o

Edit:

Jiginc mentioned that he'd lost the picture from the post he was replying to. (Cobbled streets I think)

This keeps happening to me as well. As above.

All these little glitches that keep popping up, disappearing posts, etc. deserve their own thread. "The Definitive List of Sheffield History Glitches, In Date Order". :)

It's come back again

In the THEN picture you can clearly see the building (Holmes & Younie) which was later to become the Deighton Motor Company.

In the NOW picture, this building, although it is still there, is completely hidden behind a load of trees.

Now Stuart, what was that rant we were having about too many trees in the City spoiling all the views lol
