Bayleaf

Recommended Posts

This is section 1 of an alphabetical listing of named dwellings taken from the Godfrey Edition maps of Sheffield from the beginning of the 20th Century.

It is hoped that members will post their own information concerning these places, former occupants, photographs (only post links to PictureSheffield items please), reminiscences etc.

(How about some 'now' photos from our resident paparazzi? ;-) )

Please post any information in the usual way. Information supplied will be then be cut and pasted into the relevant entry, and the poster acknowledged, thus building up a record of each place. (This will not affect the poster's count.)

Alma House

Matlock road

Sheet 294.07 Sheffield (West) 1903

Information from member Ken Knowles

Alma House

ln 1876 Alma House was number 39 Wharncliffe Road, and changed it's name to Matlock Road in 1886. From 1876 the owners were George and Mary Knowles, he was a horn haft and scale cutter, with works in Charlotte Street. He died in Dec 1891 and his wife sometime later moved to number 71.

l would like to know when Alma House was built and by whom, or anything about the Knowles family"

Number 71 is inscribed 'Alma House' so it looks like the numbering changed. Perhaps named after the Crimean War battle (1854) HW
