Sheffield and Hallamshire Savings Bank, established 1819 was on XXXXXXX St

Twas on Norfolk Street, also Surrey Street. They had Agents on Watsons Walk and just about everywhere.

Richard Burkinshaw was Manager at Church Street in 1841, William Waterfall was Manager at 17 Church Street in '52 ... 1852 that is.

Shfeffield & Hallamshire Bank Church St, became Midland Bank, became HSBC now empty

So to end it,

looks the pair of us were right, or were we both wrong? lol

But Richard seems to be the one with the correct answer.

A walkway or footpath?

It is gated for security at one end and is clearly wide enough and tall enough to drive a vehicle down.

It looks more like a private (because its gated) access road to, for example, a works yard or business unit.

Is it only open at certain times?

I don't suppose your going to show us a picture looking the other way, showing the other end of walkway as an extra clue though :(

Here you are then Dave,

seen as you twisted my arm.

Hmmm...

Now that is definately a walkway, - no way you could a get large motor vehicle down that.

Somehow I didn't expect it to look like that.

So what I thought would be a clue has only confused me further.

Or Electoral Ward Bdry

I've been looking into this and there are maps of the electoral wards in Sheffield. These boundaries have moved over the years so nothing is for sure but the Electoral Ward boundary of Sheffield Central runs very close to Shoreham street/ Charlotte Road.

The map shows the new boundary as of 2004 and the previous one. It is not beyond the realms to think that these boundaries have been changed on more than one occasion in the past.

Here are Pdfs of all the Ward Boundaries.

WARD BOUNDARIES

The Pdf was too large to upload so I've taken a screen shot.

The red line shows the present boundary and the blue line is the boundary prior to 2004

Some excellent suggestions BUT....

As ward and borough boundaries are only used for electoral purposes and bank boundaries seem to have no real purpose at all,

Why not just mark them on a map, like the one shown in vox's post?

Why did they go to all the trouble and expense of marking such boundaries with metal plates inlaid into the road?

Is it just another example of the City Council being wasteful with taxpayers money?

Marking such a boundary in the street seems pointless as it would serve no purpose on a day to day basis.

Is there only me having a go at solving this one?

I think I will need to "ask a friend" or "ask the audience" on this one by asking other members to chip in and have a go.

Hands up time ... I didn't read the question - just filled in the gaps for XXXXXXX Street and knew they were all over the place, including many folks on Church Street.

Try this one chaps.

what a difference in drain pipage from 1914 to the plastic rubbish next to it !!

Our date stones on buildings thread has recently been expanded to include dates on bridges and other structures.

Better check with SteveHB if this "other structures" bit includes dates on drainpipes.

No takers ?

Must admit it is a bit out of the way,

a clue, its in town.

So its somewhere where old meets modern, mm, does not really narrow it down.

1914, is there a military connection?

No military connection, and yes, a literal meeting of old and new.

I think another clue might help, think of a childrens organisation and a large country in Asia.

I think there are 2 mystery locations out standing

Busmans

Think this one may take some time

Steves

This photo is of one end of a fairly long walkway/footpath,

it does have a name.

Where is it and what's it called?

While you are pondering those 2 have you ever walked past this plaque

Well, its NOT made of topaz, the precious gemstone.

I suspect that TOPAZ could stand for something, the name of a company perhaps?

That makes two,

Stuart0742 & yourself.

The first member to post the correct answer here

wins a ragmans balloon.

Also the name of the walkway would be appreciated,

It's on the O/S maps.
