dunsbyowl1867
With all the construction work and 'improvements' going on in Sheffield over the past few years you would have thought some pressure could have been brought to carry out some remedial and renovation work on this once proud, and iconic, historical landmark. I assume it is an inconvenience ! Is its neglect intentional?

Come on Sheffield Council, make the most of this Iconic Landmark.

Guest Virus
The cynic in me says the Wicker Arches will mysteriously burn down one dark night... I personally love the arches and think they would provide an amazing grand entrance into the city centre, a good clean up and some fancy lights and they would look fantastic! RichardB
In a similar thought, those arches have stood for 160 years, unlikely to burn down, but, in a modern day equivalent - how about some bright spark suggests that they are "unsafe" - brilliant, huh ? Clean 'em up, bit of spit and polish and a magnificent entrance as already stated and a magnificent monument to Victorian England, when we used to have businesses that ruled the World. Guest Virus
http://www.english-heritage.org.uk/server/show/conBar.7863 According to them the state of the arches is "poor", surely if grade 2 listed they have to be maintained and kept well? Careful, people started making similar remarks about the Tinsley Towers, and lo and behold, they're suddenly unsafe and have to be demolished! s6lad
I heard from somewhere (cant remember where)t hat the stone was quarried for the arches from Wadsley Common. If you park up on the common car park and walk up the path you can still see parts of what look like a quarry site. The stone has a reddish tint to it. Can anyone out there confirm if the stone was from the common. Thanks
mike142sl
There is still a rail track using the WA, so unless that is going to be decomissioned I suspect the arch will be getting some maintenance.

Guest bozaowl
You mean like the rest of the city center. I can let you know that the Wicker Arches are in line for some works later this year / early 2009 as my company will be undertaking part of these works. Stuart0742
Lets all hope that bozaowl doesn't work for a demolition company Question Did there used to be a memorial on the Wicker Arches to the men of the LNER who were killed in the World Wars, I thought it was in on of the 2 pedestrian passages which run either side. I have been down there today and could not see it, perhaps its been moved
