Brightside Station trainspotting

Anyone out there like me spent their time trainspotting at Brightside station in the late 1940's and early 1950's ? I lived at Page Hall but grandma lived on Rothay Rd and I went to Grimesthorpe school so Brightside was convenient after school.

I remember waiting particularly for the Thames Clyde Express which I thought was the bees knees !

There were often at least 6 of us there sitting on the wall near the station along from the gas works.

When I was a bit older I went to Retford station a lot and as far afield as Warrington. Happy memories !!

I was surprsied that I was able to get onto the station there were around 100 people on there two police officers who were over seeing things the only problem was the idots who had to be told to move tripods back. Some had them litterly up to the platform edge when they they were requested to moved them beyond the platform edge paving - which is much nearer than the 6ft that is in the guildlines.

However, a good night a very strange nigth I feel sorry for the diesel 67028 normally if that had been say on a rake of carriages then the gricers would be out in force for photos poor 67028 was ignored by most of those present (Please dont tell anyone I photographed it I will be have my anorak remov ed)

For the record its not under coat its photographic grey !

Just found this my pile of "could be interesting" stuff

For the technical, it looks like a Class 46

Is that a Tetley sign just above the loco cab

Did you see the BBC4 documentary on the building of the Tornado ? Fantastic achievement - and I thought it looked very impressive in the blue-black livery.

Hi

I worked in the  Brightside Junc box at the age of 16  Circa 1963 saw many steam locos Waverley/Thames Clyde/Devonian still running early morning local to Leeds 2.10 am was unofficially called the ghost train. The occasional ER pacific would come along from Newcastle/York with a sat extra or troop special. sadly had to leave the railways because of lack of future prospects, ie Brightside power box then Sheffield Power box taking over the smaller boxes. I was train recording lad but was given the opportunity to work the box, under supervision from the signal man 90 levers I remember diverting fitted freights from the fast to the goods lines ref fast expresses. Central Control at the old Rotherham Westgate station kept a tight control on train times and woe betide anyone who held up the passenger trains. I also worked at Sheffield South 1 and Darnall where I was told to get back to the Midland. My everlasting memory of that box was a great view of Darnall  shed and in the winter frosty morning seeing a V2 and later a A2 simmering after bring in parcels trains from Newcastle. I have lots of interesting tales to tel but will leave for another time. Still have steam trains around me as I now live beside the railway in the Isle Of Man
