The arch at the side of the previously North pole pub is a square arch. Is it possable to see a square arch in the near foreground??

Can you see that the arch to the right has been bricked up and strengthened.

The North Pole pub is being done up at the moment.

People in Sheffield must be beginning to wonder why there is such a sudden interest in railway arches and the compulsion for people (paper in hand to compare) to take photos, perhaps its time to pool our resources, if only to save fuel.

I've already visited and discounted Neepsend, Attercliffe (Worksop Road), Wadsley Bridge, Chapeltown, Grange Lane (Lower Shiregreen), Tyler Street (all stone bridges) and most recently Brightside Lane jcn. Weedon Street, a brick bridge but not the one!. I've searched the Picture Post (online), no luck ....... scoured Picture Post books in the Reference Library, I may have to start getting serious soon, if my sanity lasts! ........ I am sure we will all bump into each other, literally, quite soon.

I am open to suggestions ..... please!

.......still not right!!!! where the North pole is , follow the road to the right (Sussex Street), follow it right down, and then you would bump straight into it,but the road bends right. (under the old Victoria Station) .Effingham road goes under one arch(where photo was taken). I can get down Monday and will post pics!!!! ;-)

Oh, that I wish you were right transit, then I could sleep at night. The arches to both sides of Effingham Street (continuation of the Wicker Arches)are stone and much, much higher. I've walked from Furnival Road, right up to Bernard Road (dark arches) without success.

On my Sunday morning stroll around town I will get you some pictures.

So its the arch going into town, now I know what you mean. Bit further down the road from where I was. Victoria station 'Holiday Inn' is directly above. ;-)

Thats them (i hope!) although this is looking the other way (from where the signal box was) The dark arch in the centre of the pic is over Effingham rd , and presumably where the picture was taken from- or around where the coach is. Dr Stanley ,not sure about the brick/stone. I think it may have been a mixture of both? I will get proper shots on Monday ,unless someone can get there quicker!!! ;-)

Sorry if this as been done

is it parkwood road area round where neepsend station was there was a box just before the footbridge over to parkwood springs i cant remember if that is an arched section of the railway , ill try and look at the signal box list when i can find it.

Two questions is it really a bass lorry the lettering doesnt look central and what does the name say on the right sticking out from the arch

The lorry does say "Bass". I've played about with the original on Photoshop and it's clearer. Also, if you look closely, the lorry in front has three beer barrels on the back and what look like bottle crates. We can't see to the rear of the building on the left but there is at least one lorry. Could it have been Bass's depot?

What does the sign say at the top of the post with 110 on
It's Karpol car polish .

Some information about it here. Launched in 1927, still being sold in the late 1940's.

"distributed mainly through garages".

Hugh

eee i don't know :-)

I would love to stay and discuss the "aesthetics" of railway arches throughout the ages but by 11ish I will be long gone.

I will be the one with the glazed expression (more than usual)

May not help much, but there appears to be a Band 1 dipole (BBC) tv arial at picture top left. Would make it very late '40's to '50s and '60s.

I won't bother posting my pics, I think yours proves the point.

I did come back to "discuss" with you Sue but all I saw of you was a light coloured scooter disappearing in a cloud of dust up Sussex Street ...... next time perhaps.

I have walked all the way from the North Pole to Hillfoot bridge and still cannot find these arches. The nearest to the look of them is Princess St.

I think we are now looking out of town on a slight bend of the railway, a viaduct with bricks on not as high as the Sussex St one.

Sorry I missed you earlier POPPYCHRISTINA but it was too hot to be hanging around in a bikers jacket I was starting to melt. he he

I think I am starting to think Brightside. We need a railway specialist like Steven ***.

Looks like it could be in the Neepsend/Rutland Road area near to the Stones brewery, the vehicle at the far end of the yard has Bass written on the back of it.

Excellent photo TexxUK

Has anyone checked out this one William Stones was the Cannon Brewery 43 Rutland Road near to the railway embankment.

It would be interesting to know who/what brewery/s ditributed 'Bass' around the year of the photo, it would be 'Bottled Bass' " I think" so who distributed it, was it just 'Stones' or was there another local brewer who had the franchise around that time?

If you look on various sites they say that the Bass trademark is the oldest registered trademark in Sheffield. It looks quite modern but who knows?
