There is a farm (or at least some buildings) on the left as you go up towards Abney.

I think that that it is what is now known as Highlow

Edit:

Easier just to do THIS

I knew I'd heard of it somewhere, we've walked past it numerous times.

High Low is near Hathersage. (Now called Highlow)

The Plough is by Leadmill Bridge, at the bottom of the hill which goes up towards Abney

(We've been there a few times to "eat out")

Lysons Topographical and Historical Account, 1817 - Hathersage.

Robert Eyre, eldest son of Robert Eyre, of High-low, ob 1656. ...

What a team!! Now that I've seen the photograph I realise how many times I've driven past (and how many times I've called in for a 'swift half').

So now we know. Nothing gets swept under the carpet here binsted.

I don't think we need this one on the A to Z though , a bit too far out ???

Could it be "Equestrian"?

On "Find my Past", the name has been transcribed as Thomas Hogins. Occupation still looks like "Equestrian"

It might well be that then, never seen one of those before in a pub.

Me neither, I sure that was called by many names during my time in the pub trade but never, as far as I'm aware "Equestrian"!!

I have been searching for the post where this picture was printed but I can't seem to find it.

This is the bottom of Montgomery Terrace Road and there you can see the Owl pub.

As I remember there used to be an owl in the glass work of the round window.

Our dad used to sent my sister there for a "cup " [couldn't afford glasses ] of stout of course we

wouldn't be allowed to do that today. On the other side of the road was Merridiths sweet shop.

Across the road on the right hand side is the bottom of Rutland road, facing it is the bottom of Bedford

street where the Don pub was situated although this is not visible on the picture.

It looks like the Royal Lancers used to be called the Wheatsheaf.

Looking at the addresses , they are both 18 Penistone Road and where the

keepers of the Wheatsheaf finish at 1849 the keepers begin at the Lancers

of the same address, Just a thought.

This statue of Mr.Punch was given to my mum MARY HOWSON by mr Bunting when the pub was gutted for modernisation. At the time we lived in as housekeeper in the flat on the top floor. Mary passed away 3yrs ago age 99 after a good life . The statue is alive and well and is still in my house. I visited the Park last year and spoke to the current landlady giving her some history and a photo of Mr. Punch , Can anyone remember what Mr Punches function was at The Park Hotel 60 odd yrs ago?

correct, it was fastened to the public bar and connected to a gas pipe . it gave off a pilot light for custermers to light their ciggies .Did you know there was also apewter cat in top hat & tails (vester tilly) that did the same function. Did you know that the current car park used to be a bowling green?.Thats the way to do it.
