At around the time the Children's hospital was settling into it's new premises on Western Bank, the Children's Shelter was being set up in Norfolk Street. Has anyone any further information about it?

In Norfolk Street at the Halifax Building Society, is a doorway inscribed, " The Jeffie Bainbridge Children's Shelter ", where food and shelter was available for waifs and strays. It was erected by Emerson Bainbridge, a well known philanthropist and Justice of the Peace, in memory of his wife. It was opened by the Duchess of Portland in 1894

Emerson Muschamp Bainbridge, 1845-1911

Colliery manager for the Nunnery pits and others, mining consulting engineer and philanthropist. He founded and built the Jeffie Bainbridge Home for Waifs and Strays [children] on Norfolk Street.

MP and the Managing Director of the Nunnery Colliery.

By 1911, Whites Directory was showing the Shelter at the Bottom of Corporation Street, just by Corporation Bridge.

The Honourary Superintendent was William H Chapman.

Thanks Dunsbyowl for the picture, I hadn't seen it before. I only have three books on Sheffield out here, Aspects of Sheffield 1, Sheffield Cinemas and Born in Sheffield, a history of Jessops Hospital. Everything else has to come of the Net, so I'm grateful for any help you can give.

Took a picture of this doorway the other day and was going to ask about it! It is an interesting survivor and as the cutting says, it is to the credit of the bank that it has been preserved.
