duckweed
Noticed while coming back from shopping that building had date on its drainpipe. Started me wondering about former history because judging by doorway it has had to be either pub or shop, Is near end of London Road.
RLongden
Can't quite get back to the build date of 1892, but... In 1901, White's directory has 30 London Road as a Draper's shop, with Paul Silvester Wainwright as the proprietor. In 1911, White's directory has 24 London Road as a Bootmaker's shop, with Mrs. Lucy Eleanor Faulks as the proprietor. It's the same location and not suprising the building number has changed, as they were often re-numbered as the area developed. Since then it split into two buildings No.32 on the left, No.30 on the right and has been a Draper's shop again ( Dawson's in the 60's) Dawson's Drapers Shop, 32 London Road Beamers Restaurant in the 1980's Beamers Restaurant, 30-32 London Road ... and then an Indian restaurant in the recent past, currently a Chinese restaurant You can see various views of the buidling on Picture Sheffield, by using combinations of London Road, Lansdowne Road, Beeley Street, Boston Street and Pearl Street. Lansdowne Hotel also shows the building, given it's across Beeley Street (which was little wider than a cobbled gennel). The building is unmistakable, with the window layout and the raduised roofline. However, some of the shots from the 50's and 60's that saw the clearance of many buildings in-and-around, it must have been lucky (or well built and thriving) to escape the wrecking ball?! Edmund
P.S.Wainwright's drapery store at 491-495 London Road had a Fire Salvage Sale starting on 9th January 1892. In March 1893 the lease on their premises in Broad Street expired ( they had been there for 40 years). Possibly due to these premises problems they had the shop at 30 London Road built? In February 1893 they advertised "HOSIERY - Wanted about March 1st, good WINDOW DRESSER and SALESMAN; also Assistant for the Manchester. P.S.Wainwright London road and Broad street"
