Google this for great photos of Sheffield tram 264 from its delivery to Crich to its fully restored condition by dedicated volunteers.

Now, July / August, is a good time to visit the tram museum, and so much of interest on the way. For those who don't know, the village ( pronounced 'Crych') is in a spectacular, elevated location with views over many miles. Passing through picturesque Matlock and Matlock Bath, you turn off left by the famous 'Sir Richard Arkwright' mill at Cromford. The mill was the subject of various TV documentaries, especially that of Fred Dibnah. Built there, away from prying eyes to avoid industrial spies stealing his machine details, it even features weapon slots like on a castle to ward off any attackers ! Finished products were transported up a nearby steep hill on a cable railway to connect with a canal.

Passing the mill, you then have a great country ride up to Crich where you can ride the Sheffield trams there.

Just noticed on one of Richard's photos that the chap with the hat and walking stick looks like Councillor Sidney Dyson, what a brass-necked cheek ! This is the man responsible for scrapping the trams in Sheffield, trams with years of life left in them, all have run at Crich for over 50 years now, 510 serving Sheffield for just about 10 years of a forty-year life span for trams. Those not preserved were sold off for scrap to Tommy Ward's for £40 each in 1960, well done Councillor Dyson and chums.
