Old rider
This is a picture of A C Baynes (Stainless Stephen) in his racing days. It was possibly taken in 1921 in Fitzalan Square. Can anyone confirm this location?
neddy
Looks like the Elephant Inn in the background.
HughW
Definitely; 2-4 Norfolk Street. So he is in Fitzalan Square. The general Post Office is out of sight to the left and Edward VII to the right.
boginspro
Elephant, at the bottom of Nolfolk Street was a regular call for me, arch of the White building to the right is still there.
Old rider
Thank you for the information. The location confirms that the picture is the start of a Sharrow Cycling Club Sheffield to Bridlington record attempt that A.C. Baynes rode in 1921. We were a little confused by there being no tram tracks visible in the picture. Place to place records were timed from the head post office of the start town to the head post office of the town that was the finish of the record ride. How clearly background abjects show up in old photos would have depended on the camera settings, just as it does today. Brilliant photo, by the way.
