SteveHB
Reply to Steve HB: Yes, I think procession is coming down Mitchell Street. I'm pretty sure the first name of the Licensed Victualler on the sign is 'George', which leads me to plump for 1880 George Nicholson 39 Mitchell Street? 39 Mitchell Street was tha address of the Ostrich Inn. SteveHB
Reasonably sure that this is where the Ostrich Inn was, marked in green.
St Annington
My computer keeps inserting random 'quotes' when I reply to posts - sorry! I can delete the text but not the whole quote box. Is the picture from 1861? According to the 1863 map on Picture Sheffield http://www.picturesheffield.com/maps.php?file=031 many of the buildings on the upper part of what we are assuming is Mitchell Street (i.e the buildings on the LHS and RHS of the picture) were not built. By 1873 http://www.picturesheffield.com/maps.php?file=033 Mitchell Street was developed more in line with the picture.
RichardB
Someone has no doubt scribbled 1861 somewhere and it has become "factualised" even though incorrect.
ukelele lady
My thoughts are Fawcett Street / Mushroom Lane and the people in the bottom left corner looking over St Stephens church wall?
