Calvin72
Great photo! Is it Weston Street Local ... something, on the banner? Can anyone make out the street sign far right? I can see serious SH detective work coming on!

RichardB
Not entirely sure, but this has the feeling of Townhead Street .... perfectly willing to be wrong, just a thought/starter for ten.

RichardB
I know the answer and everything I've guessed at so far is completely wrong. I'll shut up and let other people try to untangle the problem.

Old rider
1861! What a great photo. Wow. I think that is a little too early because early photographic plates exposure took a long time. If it was 1861 I would expect the people to be blurred as they walked along. Here is a digitised glass slide of Fitzalan Square taken by my Grandfather around the turn of the century. His plate camera had the option of uncovering the lens for a timed period or of fixing a rather slow shutter to the end of the lens.

Edmund
As for the year, any idea? I was miles out! Weston Street Chapel was opened on September 6th 1861 by Lord Teynham. As September is after Whitsuntide, the date of 1861 is wrong. Wrong by how much is another question.
Oldbloke
In 1891 my Great great grandfather George Watkinson was Chapel Keeper (ie caretaker) at Weston Street Chapel. He lived at 87 Mitchell Street.

St Annington
Reply to Steve HB: Yes, I think procession is coming down Mitchell Street. I'm pretty sure the first name of the Licensed Victualler on the sign is 'George', which leads me to plump for 1880 George Nicholson 39 Mitchell Street?
