Having received a Directory Of Sheffield 1789, one address that keeps popping up is China Square, I know that Paradise Square was nick-named Pot Square but where was China Square?

Let's introduce an element of debate on this one?

In 1889 Pawson and Brailsford published a facsimile copy of the 1787 Sheffield Directory, and it was reviewed in the Independent, where Cheney Square was identified as the new name of China Square:

Cheney Square seems to be the answer, it's not Paradise Square as that's listed throughout the directory.

It seems to be a popular theme that 'China' was a corruption of 'Cheney', rather than a conscious change of name?
