Second World War Gun Battery.

Can anyone help me?

When I was a small boy, my mates and I used to walk from Firth Park, along Longley Lane and through an area that we knew as Seven Ponds. There were a lot of allotments and small market gardens there. Passing through there, we had to walk up a road and onto some spare ground where these gun emplacements were.

My question is, what was this area called? We knew it as Atlas and Norfolk but I couldn't swear to it. All I know is that we shot a hell of a lot of German planes down between us.

We always referred to it as Shirecliffe Hill. There are a couple of pix of the site as it was in the late 1990s as well as of a ZZ battery in...Sheffield: Armourer to the British Empire, published in 2004

Thanks but where do I get Atlas and Norfolk from? There used to be a Sports Ground up there as well, was that it?

Sports ground Shirecliffe Road opposite Miles road,

That's the one. I lived on Longley as a child and the names Atlas and Norfolk ring a bell too. Was it a works sports ground connected with Atlas and Norfolk works?

The AA batteries I think were further over on the hill overlooking town, roughly where the short-lived helipad was sited. I'm not sure what's there now?

The old Atlas and Norfolk sports ground ( name taken from two of Firth Brown's works ,to whom the sports ground belonged) is now the Sheffield United Academy. The gun site is, as bayleaf says, is on the other side of the road and up the hill, where it overlooks town and the East end.
