No one seems to have mentioned the passing away of Tony Whyte.
Although he was born in Glasgow he spent most of his childhood in the Fulwood Cottage Homes.

He was one of our best club turns before being the resident compere at the Fiesta.
He was always imaculately dressed and was a real Sheffield favourite.

He started off as a singing waiter at the Rotherham House pub near the Castle Market.
At one time he was living in a flat above the Montesa Cafe on Infirmary Road.
He died at the ripe old age of 84

In connection with the above project, which is an attempt to list (with biogs) all journalists who worked for the famous old morning newspaper that closed in 1986, we are seeking info on the following Sheffield Telegraph reporters from the 1950s:

Bill Guy; John Stevenson; Jacqueline Wilkie; Wacker Barnett; Jim Corfield; Eric Dobson; Peter Rowland; and Sylvia 'Kit' Turnbull.

Bill Guy was the son in law of another well-known Telegraph journalist, George Hopkinson; while Sylvia Turnbull was in some way connected with the family that ran the Gilmours Brewery in Sheffield.

Wacker Barnett, by the way, is a genuine name. He came from Chester, and, so I'm told, hated it when people thought his accent meant he was a native of Liverpool!
A forum member who lived as a lad on Blackbrook Road area around 1960 kindly posted a colour photo taken from the Blackbrook Road area looking back down Redmires Road. Unfortunately I can't remember who it was.
I seem to have managed to lose the image somehow and my attempts to locate it on the forum have come to nought.
If anyone remembers posting the photo I would be very much obliged if they could point me at it again or re-post it.

I hope some one can help, During WW2 Upper Midhope was taken over by the Army as a shooting range. I've got all sorts of info and have spoke to people who remember those day however as it was a secret base I've had no joy finding any photos, Paticularly of the defenses that were put up following the Dambusters raid. It was thought that Germany would return the favour and bomb Langsett and Midhope dams, In deed the area was attacked a few times as it supplied water to sheffields industry, there was a star decoy near by(now overgrown in a wood).

I've found lots of the bases to the catenery defenses which was a huge cable stretched across the dams from 2 high towers with weight cables/chains hung from them. I've seen a sketch would love to see an original print.

The moors around this area are full of ordanance and are still dangerous.

I don't know if anyone's come across this before, but went to the library today and found "The Clockwatcher's Guide To Sheffield" by Stephen Johnson, he of the military buildings, volunteers, racecourses etc books. It was published 2008 but i've not come across it before.

There are photos of most public clocks around the city, past and present.

Unfortunately he doesn't solve the great mystery we've had, i.e. was there ever a clock on Boots on West Street.

I did though like the bit about the Blue Moon Cafe. In international airports etc you often get a row of clocks showing the time in the various time zones, London, New York, Moscow, etc. In the Blue Moon they have a row of four clocks. Harking back to the pre-railways era, they show the different times in Sheffield, Barnsley, Rotherham and Doncaster, based on longitude. So Barnsley is 4 seconds, Rotherham is 32 seconds, and Doncaster 1 minute 28 seconds ahead of Sheffield.

Sheffield Fifty Years Ago

Hi there, first post on the forum and I hope you can help me. I have posted this same question on another well known Sheffield forum but was doing a Google when I came across your site.

My parents moved away from Sheffield in the early 60's. They do return every now and then mainly to visit me (I moved here in about 1998). However, whenever they come down they generally walk around the peak district and rarely go into Sheffield itself.

They are down here just now and I may take them for a tour of Sheffield to show them what has changed since they left. Things that I can probably think of include the Peace Gardens and Coles Corner. There's also the trams now.

Could anyone advise me what else there is that I should show them? My dad used to work as a miner (somewhere near Barnsley) but used to go on courses somewhere near West Bar.

Obviously there's Meadowhall but I don't think that my dad would enjoy a tour of that as much!

Edgar Allen & Co

I believe that my grandfather worked at Edgar Allens on Shepcote Lane, probably til the mid 50's, he'd have been 65 in 1955. His name was Joe Wilkinson, and he was lollipop man at Wincobank School when he retired.

I have his stainless steel cufflinks which were presented to him ( we originally thought for 25 years service, but now think that the '25' refers to something to do with the firm rather than Joe's long service) - (see poor photo) . They have a logo of a leaping deer - this was the 'STAG' trademark for Allen's engineers tools range. We think Joe was involved with the first of a special batch of Stainless Steel - apparently he ground the first ingot of stainless (why they'd want to grind ingots I don't know).

I've not found much information about Edgar Allens & Co (Wikipedia info at http://en.wikipedia....Allen_&_Company , Graces Guide info at http://www.gracesgui...ar_Allen_and_Co ). Looking at old maps, all their premises were called 'Imperial Works' despite them being spread over several sites. Who was Edgar Allen?

I'd be interested to hear any memories of any Edgar Allen workers, especially in the tools division.

Sign The Pulp Petition

A bunch of Pulp fans have started a petition to get their final album, We Love Life, released in a deluxe edition just like their previous three albums for Island. We Love Life is a marvellous work by a band that has always been inextricably linked with Sheffield. In fact, We Love Life features Jarvis and co's last epic song about Sheffield, Wickerman. The band recorded many demos that have never seen the light of day and it seems fitting that 10 years after they originally called it a day, and with their profile as high as ever due to some astonishing worldwide live shows, that this record gets the release it deserves. So sign the petition for the sake of the bands fans, the band and Sheffield.

Brickwall Time - Sarah Mullaney

Come up against another brickwall with Sarah Mullaney, born Sheffield 30th November 1892, married Sheffield Oct-Nov-Dec Qtr 1911, died Sheffield 1975 but I cannot find her or, so it seems, her family on the 1901 census return. I think I have her on the 1911 census but she is misspelt on both Ancestry (Mulloaney) and Findmypast (Mullancey) aged 18 years as a border on Stafford Street, Park. Hoping a few fresh eyes can help me out.

Coronation Ode

Coronation Ode, Op 44 is a work composed by Sir Edward Elgar for soprano, contralto, tenor and bass soloists, chorus and orchestra, with words by A. C. Benson.

It was written for the Coronation of King Edward VII and Queen Alexandra in 1902, and dedicated "by Special Permission, to His Most Gracious Majesty King Edward VII". But the Coronation was postponed due to the King being ill, so the first performance was not until 2 October 1902 at the Sheffield Festival, by the Sheffield Choir, soloists Agnes Nicholls, Muriel Foster, John Coates and David Ffrangcon Davies, with Elgar conducting.

The first London performance was at Covent Garden on 26 October 1902.

There are six parts:

I - Introduction: "Crown the King", for soloists and chorus

II - (i) "The Queen", for chorus; (ii) "Daughter of ancient Kings", for chorus

III - "Britain, ask of thyself", for bass soloist and men's chorus

IV - (i) "Hark upon the hallowed air" for soprano and tenor soloists, followed by (ii) "Only let the heart be pure", for soprano, contralto, tenor and bass soloists

V - "Peace, gentle peace", for soprano, contralto, tenor and bass soloists and chorus unaccompanied

VI - Finale: "Land of hope and glory", contralto soloist, with chorus

Heeley - Valley Road United Methodist Church Grounds - History

I discovered that a few houses down from where I live use to be a Methodist church. (Apparently with no graveyard?) I checked the records at the library and the first date of someone living here (house built) was in 1902. On many maps around 1890s shows only parkland however that church was there (unshown) and with no maps beyond this to my availability. I am new to this and my question is if any one knows if there were any other developments near this church? along Valley road, pictures, news. I will appreciate any input relative,

Grove House, Barnsley Road

Hoping for assistance please! I'm looking for any information about Grove House on Barnsley Road. It was briefly mentioned in the post at: http://www.sheffieldhistory.co.uk/forums/index.php?/topic/6057-grove-lodge-and-cottage-for-dunsbyowl

The occupant in 1833 was William Wilkinson (gent) as listed in the White's Directory. William had inherited Crowder House some years previously, but the Crowder estate was rented out (advertisement in the ‘Independent’ in 1831), probably to George Barrett, cattle dealer etc. Barrett went bankrupt in 1841 and his unpaid rent meant that William had to mortgage the freehold of Crowder House to Thomas James Parker, William remaining as a tenant for life. In 1851 the land (57 acres) was being farmed by Mira, the eldest of William’s daughters, living at Crowder with 2 of her sisters, while her brother Walter was manufacturing shears in Sheffield. On William’s death in 1854 he left Longley Bottom House and its orchard to his widow Sarah (who would die in 1860). In May 1855 the family were dispossessed of the Crowder part of William's estate under an action of ejectment initiated by Parker and others. Bernard Wake then bought the estate from Parker by public auction on 2nd February 1857. There was ill-feeling between the Wilkinsons and the Wakes - reported in newspaper articles in August 1857 and February 1858 regarding court cases of apple stealing, trespass and boundary disputes.

I've looked at some old maps of the Barnsley Road area for Grove House, with no luck - possibly not old enough?. Any info would be much appreciated!

Ambrose Shardlow

Hi, im new to this site, but was wondering if anyone can shed some light on a solid silver and enamel badge left to me by my father. I believe it belonged to his father, Joseph William Eyre. It shows the Sheffield crest with A.S.S.C above and SHEFFIELD below. I have been talking on Sheffield Forum and on Sheffield Indexers about this. The main idea is that is possibly stands for Ambrose Shardlow Silver Cup, or Ambrose Shardlow Sports Club. If it is just a sports club badge, I wouldnt have thought they would have issued hallmarked silver badges. The hallmark is Birmingham 1909.

We have eliminated the idea that it was a football badge because it would have had the year i.e. 1909/10.

The only sport my grandfather was interested in as far as I am aware was golf, he won the 2nd class finals at Tinsley Park Golf Club in 1928.

The other possibility was suggested on Sheffield Forums, and that is it could be something to do with Attercliffe, my grandfather was born and brought up in Attercliffe.

Any ideas?

This is a picture of the badge.

Jordanthorpe Tower Block Demolition

It has been known for some weeks that the last remaining tower block on Jordanthorpe, the 15 storey Chantrey block, was to be demolished by controlled explosion.

Having missed most (but not all) the Norfolk Park tower block demolitions, and having failed to record any of them to photograph or film I would have liked to have seen this one.

MrsH found out about it at work, very few local residents on the estate seemed to know a deal about it, evenhough some of them must have lived in the safety exclusion zone close to the block.

The date was set for Sunday 29 April 2012, so I let Stuart know.

MrsH managed to establish that it would be between 11am and mid-day.

In the event on the day the weather was horendous and neither me or Stuart ventured out with photographic equipment.

However, the demolition took place at 11:00am on the set day without us.

Fortunately, there were people there braving the weather who filmed it, mainly in low resolution on mobile phones, and then posted it on YouTube so that we have a record of the event for historical reference.
