Indoor Golf Course On Fargate 1930

Hi All

Does anyone know anything about the "Premier" 18 hole indoor miniature golf course at 68 Fargate. It was opened by the Lord Mayor C.W. Beardsley on Thursday 9th October 1930.

Entrance fee was 1s and a prize of £10 was given to the most successful player every week.

The attached pic is of an advert placed in the "Sheffield Independant" the week before.

The other pic is a snippet, also from the "Sheffield Independant" from Saturday 8th November 1930. The admission fee was reduced to 6d for the following Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, Special promotion or not popular?

How long did it last, was it bombed out or just close down?

I'm no golfer but I am intrigued. Never heard of it before today.

Hi Al,

welcome to Sheffield History.

That's an unusual find, I had never heard of an indoor miniature golf course in Sheffield before,

in 1925 '68 Fargate' was the premises of Loxley Brothers, printers

At a later date the building was used by Cantors

Orchard Square now stands on the site.

I don't think there was any major air raid damage to those perticular buildings,

sounds like indoor golf never caught on in Sheffield.

The original buildings were still there when Orchard Sq was developed, as they had to pull them down to replace them.

Indoor Golf? 18 holes too! sounds quite interesting.

In all my books containing old pictures of Sheffield i have never seen a reference to it.

I'd never heard of it either but it must have existed for at least five weeks!

If they had to reduce the entrance prices a month after opening perhaps it wasn't popular and judging by the prizes awarded every week, to the sum of £10, it probably wasn't profitable either.

Just a thought really,

but I can't help but wonder if J. G. Graves could have had something to do with it,

he was a very generous person,

and the prizes sound like the sort of things that he would have sold from his mail order business.

Could Mr Graves have been the sponsor?

Anyone know anything? Are we talking something akin to 'Crazy' Golf or larger?
