I think not, the lists are the result of my early work on this subject, the confusion is my fault.

However, there were multiple places called "The Ball/Golden Ball/Old Ball" etc etc on Campo Lane.

Needs a concentrated effort by all interested parties to come out with some agreeable conclusion.

Whilst The Hitchen bit might provide a strong clue, I'd like lots more input on this (if anyone is able), further Directories/Census information. Anyone care to come up with the "be all and end end" list of "Ball" - Campo/Townhead, I'd be most interested.

Campo Lane seems also to have been the subject of much "Landlord rotation", the same keepers moving round between multiple premises (even every few months).

The Hitchen part is correct, up to at least 1873 electoral roll, Thomas Hitchen leaves the Golden ball some time in between this and 1880 to take The Grey Horse, Blast Lane/Stoke Street

Then returns to take The Ball (not the golden ball) 26 Campo Lane sometime between 1891-1901

Guess is that Gregory had the Golden Ball whilst Thomas Hitchen came of age.

Thank you Neddy - Great input.

Any and all further input appreciated - it seems a bit of a tangled knot to undo. (I've not considered this particular problem in over a year).

Through all the books I've gone through never has it been listed separately but

it has been listed with two addresses. This is what I've got, I've added the two first

dates on of yours as I don't have them.

What do we do with the "spares" e.g. after 1893 ? and Hannah Marshall and Anti Pass Stephens both in 1828 ?

There isn't any spares after 1893, it just carries on from my list like this

My last entry

1893 Thomas Hawksley

Yours

1901 John Nowlan

1905 John Nowlan [Campo Lane /Townhead Stree]

1911 John Nowlan

1919 Mrs Ada Carter

1951 Louis Butterill

Sit and check it out , it all falls into place except for the Thomas Hitchens who is not mentioned

in any of the dates that I have from 1825 to 1893. As he is down for 1871 and also 1881, couldn't

we get a check out on the 1871/1881 census?

As for having two names, I always think of the time of year as one moved out Anti Pass Stephens in 1828

the other Hannah Marshall moved in.

1828 Anti Pass Stephens / Hannah Marshall.

6 Townhead Street -Thomas Hitchen 26 publican

1872/3 Electoral Roll- Thomas Hitchen 69 Campo Lane

1862 dir. Eliza Hitchen 6 Townhead Street & 85 Campo Lane

Presume 85 turned to 69 due to alterations to Campo lane.

Thanks neddy, I trust Thomas is Eliza's son.

and 6 Townhead Street.
