ukelele lady
I know a lot of people go to the local studies to search for their ancesters on the fiche readers or micro films, or maybe just to look up articles in their huge collection of books. I was there last week and I had my purse stollen, you wouldn't think it would happen in such a quiet open place. It didn't happen when I walked away from the table to get another book, it was while I sat studying as always they work in twos. One distracted me at the table as the other was under the table and into my bag. Someone told me later they had seen them, which I did at the time but didn't suspect anything. Searchers beware. Bayleaf
Regretably the Central Library has had a problem for a long time. Then of course some years ago someone managed to steal the lifesize bronze bust of Hunter from the top of a set of high shelves i Local Studies. It was never recovered. Diablo
Unfortunately, it is a major problem there. I used to work in the building and people were having things stolen almost every other day.

bonnie
There are lockers in the local studies section to lock your bags in. I always use these.
duckweed
I have my purse in a bum bag so is with me all the time but if you can't do that then yes lock it in a locker. A library is like any public place. Never leave your valuables unattended.
ukelele lady
What's happening at the Sheffield Archives , Shoreham Street, it now only opens three times per week and where have all the longstanding experienced staff gone like Gillian, Robin and Graham? The new searchers were not getting much help when I last visited, it was as though no one seemed to know what was needed. I did half read something last week about it going to be run by volunteers ????? surely not.
