Hi,

I'm trying to find out what was on the site of Sheffield University's SoundHouse, Gell street. Here is an image of the building now http://www.shef.ac.uk/jessop/developmentan...soundhouse.html.

I found this picture of the site in 2000 http://www.picturesheffield.com/cgi-bin/pi...ff.refno=c02660. It is the second building along on the lefthand side between the transport building and the University Health Centre. In this picture: http://www.picturesheffield.com/cgi-bin/pi...ff.refno=c02664 you can see the building behind the Humanities Research building. Does anyone know what this building was, and what was here before this?

Also does anyone know much about the church which sits just behind the SoundHouse building? Also any general history about this area would be usefull.

Thanks for any help,

Aimee

It is tall, has a lot of windows and what appears to be an impressive archway.

Is there a better view of it on Google fella; if not we are looking for help from the dog-walkers again.

Any more thoughts ? It is a big arch for the home for starving cats !

A photo of The Church at the back of the Sound House appears in my link.

Forgot to mention the area is called Portobello

Since its been knocked down, modern pictures are going to be unlikely

Any old buildings left nearby ? Looking for house numbers now ...

Sheffield Servants Home ? 137-139 Gell Street (1911-1925)

George Spurr, Joiner, builder and Undertaker, 135 Gell Street (1893) - he might have used an archway ...

Henry Webster, Attorney & Solicitor, home 51 Gell Street (1851 Census)

It does say "51", I've checked the previous page, "57" in on that page.

Hi,

Thanks for the information everyone, its looking really interesting. I've found some really useful information on the councils planning application website. According to the planning application the building onsite before the SoundHouse was called Victoria Works. Does this mean it was some sort of industrial building? Used in the cutlery industry? Here is a few pictures of the building.

George Turton, Charles Henry Turton and Frank Turton; Victoria Works, 257 Portobello Street and Victoria Street (all 1893)

also John Wain (as before), Table knife manufacturer, Victoria Works, 51 Gell Street (1893)

If you have a few hours to spare you could trawl through here where there are lots of information and photos of the development in the area.
