Hello There

I have been trawling through this great site trying to find a clue to the name of a pub my great grandfather had in Attercliffe. My dad remembers going there in the 1950's... his grandfather was Alfred Charles Parkin and he ran the pub with his wife (? name). Dad remembers the pub being located near the junction of Attercliffe Road and Broughton Lane. Any ideas how i can find out the name of the pub???

I have already found another relative through this site, Ernest Parkin who had the Royal Oak in Upper Allen Street, so thanks to all you lovely folk who post the publicans lists, very helpful!

Many thanks

Sharon

Hello Sharon,

There was a pub at the junction of Attercliffe Common and Broughton Lane called the Broughton Inn - its sounds likely?

Here's a photograph

Hiya, and welcome to the Site. I am the originator of the Pubs lists (with magnificent assistance from Dunsby and Tsavo)' I don't have your Parkin-relative but the reason may be that our lists, by definition, end in 1951 - anything we have after 1951 is sort of "an accident".

There is a posting somewhere of 1951 publicans, but that has been absorbed into the main list.

Worth checking the Beerhouses thread (may sound daft, but they were around into the 1970's).

If you find him, I'd be more than interested to see your findings; I've been on this Pubs-listing-malarky two and a half years now; I said this would be the best Sheffield Pubs listing anywhere; most scoffed and pointed, but after a brief spell in a straight-jacket, I was released and the small band of believers and me just got on with it.

They thought I was doolally-tap with the Maps as well !

God Luck, keep us posted.

Checked my 1954 Kelly's:

Checked surrounding pubs and got no matches for Broughton Inn, Bird in Hand (Became Carbrook Club, next door to Broughton), Excelsior, Enfield, Wentworth, Pheasant, Carbrook Hall, Lambpool, Railway (Noose & Gibbet), Friendship or Fishermans.

No match for him in Alphabetical index either.

The Fitzwilliam was on Milford St nearer to the common than the Wentworth House which is still there it is opposite the bottom of Broughton Lane, the pub went with the road widening, there is a picture of the Fitzwilliam on page 11 of Michael Liversidge's excellent book A Wander Down The Cliffe.

The BT directory on Ancestry lists a 'C Parkin'

at the Milton Arms, Rockingham Street in 1952

at the Gate Inn, Wadsley Bridge in 1954
