Does anyone know the date (or year at least) each of the towerblocks on Norfolk Park were demolished. Particularly the ones on St Aidens. I've been searching the site and found loads of info but need the date if possible. Thanks ;-)

The 3 blocks on St Aidens (opposite the Cemetry entrance on City Road) were demolished in August 1999, not sure of the exact date as I was not in the country at the time and missed it. The 2 Guilford blocks at Northern Avenue / Spring Lane were demolished in November of the same year. (I think 7th November but in any case it was a Sunday so nearest Sunday to this date).

If you have searched the site you will have come across the threads on Norfolk Park in the early 70's and another on Norfolk Park in the 1980's and 1990's. These contain the odd hidden gem of information like this. I am sure other members, especially ex residents of particular blocks will be able to provide more dates for the other blocks.

OK here's a first try at creating the information that SheffBlade asked for, demolition dates of the tower blocks.

The list of blocks is taken from our own research presented in the Norfolk Park in the 1970's thread

I am hoping that other members can supply us with the missing dates so that the list can be updated

Note that the blocks were often demolished in pairs or groups where they stood and so share the same date.

Thanks for the info

I have a rough estimate for Beeches but I'm afraid thats all. I think it was 1997 or early 1998 as I was pregnant at the time and I had to 'evacuate' the house I lived in at the time

I think you could be right. I had a friend at work who went to see Beechview and Bankside demolished and she left work for a new job shortly after in 1999 so it was before both St Aidens and the Guildford blocks.

Hopefully with the list above we will eventually be able to collect the missing dates and update the list until it is complete.

I know the ones on Park Grange Mount were one of the first as they were 'pulled' down and not blown. I lived right next to them at the time. I believe could have been as early as 1996 if not earlier. It was these blocks that made them decide to blowdown the rest and not use cranes/bulldozers as they learnt that it took too long and the noise and dust to local residents was horrendous.

When this block of flats I am stood on to take this picture was blown down in November 1999 the dust it created, along with the prevailing slight breeze, covered all those houses you can see at the bottom of Northern Avenue. I bet the residents wern't happy about that, but then again I don't think there is a "clean" way to get rid of the flats.

Guest plain talker

Of the Norfolk Park Flats themselves, Grange block, on Tower drive was definitely the last one to come down, and Mickley Block (Beldon Road) was the second-last.

I had a flat in the Mickley Block, back in the 1990s. My ex-hubby lived in one of the Claywood Drive blocks until they were cleared for demolition.

Oh yes, the Claywood blocks, now they were dismantled rather than blown down so there is no specific day for them as the dismantling process took weeks. All 3 blocks were dismantled in 2006 -2007.

I suppose as blowing the block down takes a matter of minutes to complete we can give an exact date but as dismantling takes a fairly long time we can stick to a month or year in which it happened.

Slowly filling in the missing dates

I just had a look on Picture Sheffield and it shows my old block, Mandrake, as being demolished 1990.

Although in the date box it does say decade, then 1990, so I'm still not sure, and I had moved off the estate by then, and I haven't the foggiest idea myself.

Annoyingly PictureSheffield does only give the date as a decade so although it says 1990 it means the 1990's (1990 - 1999 inclusive) which unfortunately is not accurate enough for what we would like here.
