I was sorry to hear of the death of Bill Bartles at the age of 77 after a battle with cancer. Many people will remember Bill as a notable authority on angling, and an outstanding writer. I remember when Bill started writing a weekly column, Where Fish Are Biting, in the old Morning Telegraph in the late 1960s. I think he was working for the old PO Telephones company in those days, but fishing was his great passion. He had a natural flair for writing, and with a bit of guidance from the sports staff at the Telegraph, he quickly developed a good style. Soon he was writing regularly in the Angling Telegraph, and other publications began to use his pieces. He went on to write a number of books. After the Morning Telegraph closed in 1986, Bill did a lot of work for what had become the Angling Star (the powers that be didn't want to retain'Telegraph' in the title!), and he was widely admired as a man who knew his subject, and as someone with tremendous enthusiasm. Bill always had a ready smile and was one of the most pleasant guys I have ever known.

I'm sorry to hear about Bill, I fished with him on quite a few occasions.

He was a very good all round angler and once represented England in the International Angling Championships,

he also had a love for photography.

Many years ago, I went with Bill Bartles, Derek Dooley and Dennis Woodhead on a fishing trip. I was the only non-angler in the party of four, and we had a great time. We went somewhere down Peterborough way. Dennis Woodhead was full of fun, and Derek was good company, and they both had a lot of time for Bill Bartles and his knowledge of fishing.
