Does anyone have any photos of, or information about the Union Forge known as Holding's Forge, and in the 19th century the Don Steel Works and Saville Works on Saville Street. I'm researching it for an excavation publication, and any additional inofrmation would be greatly appreciated.

It's the site directly East of Saville House. I'm also hoping to find people who worked there.

I've posted other requests for this site elswhere on this forum so please excuse the repetition if you've already seen them.

There is a report of an archeological dig of the Don Valley / Saville Works here:

http://www.ingentaconnect.com/content/maney/iar/2011/00000033/00000001/art00005

The archaeological site encompassed two main areas. At its north-eastern end was part of Hobson’s Steel Works, later known as the Don Steel Works and Hobson Houghton; its western end, comprising approximately two-thirds of the excavation area, was part of the Saville Works which later became the Union Forge and Holding’s Forge.

I am the 3rd Great Grand nephew of Bridget Caroline Wrightson who was married to Francis Hobson. I am seeking any information / photos etc, concerning the Don Steel works apart from what I can seek on the net.

Thank you in advance.

The company were forge masters and also had premises on Worthing Road. The actual name, from memory, was John Holding and Co. ( 1955)Ltd. The major shareholders were a family living in the south of England who only visited to collect the profit ( or so it was said)
