Here's an old shot of Chesterfield Road from 1960

Personally I can't see it's changed much (apart from the tram tracks disappearing of course)

Thats how it looked when I lived near there as a kid until we left for Chesterfield in 1961. The photo is taken near where Derbyshire Lane comes down a steep hill and joins this main road. I used to live up and off Derbyshire Lane on Cliffe Field Road. The bottom of our back gar4den looked out onto Meersbrook Park. My primary and junior school, Meersbrook Bank was situated near the bottom of Derbyshire Lane.

Its hard to remember what the shops were now on that main road section. There was certainly a sweet shop, a grocers, a sort of junk/bric-a-brac shop as well, and maybe a hardware/ironmongers type place and hairdressers.

Further down and out of the picture the road goes down and round finally to Heeley Bridge. On the left was a very large Lavers wood yard and railway sidings on the other side of it.

On the right hand side, looking from this photo, on one of the street corners (either the one clearly in view or the one just partly in view) was a car spares shop. Outside this shop for many years was the shell of a single seater racing car. I always looked out for that when I was on the Chesterfield Bus every other saturday visiting my grans.

Hi Admin,

The Chesterfield Road photo looks as though it could be a still from a piece of movie film. Is it? I seem to think I read elsewhere on this site about someone who had some old Sheffield film taken from trams or buses? Is that was this is? I can see the tram lines on the road. Are the films available to buy?

Its a marvellous resource and a great reminder of my childhood years. Just a bit further up the road from here, I was always amazed how well the trams used to travel up the very steep hill past Graves Park upto Four Lanes End at Norton.

Hi Paul,

Yeah - it's a still from a tram movie that shows a trip from one end of town (is it meadowhead ?) to Tinsley.

You can spot them on Ebay from time to time - on either vhs or dvd - search for Sheffield Tram and every now and again a supplier sells them

Well worth the outlay - the one I have is not one of those, but the ones on Ebay cover all tramroutes in movie format and sound fantastic so I'm keeping my eye out for them on Ebay again (last one went for about £6)

Yes started out a bright red and ended up a very pale pink.

I remember that. It faded in the sun over the years.

It was a fiber glass "kit car" body,

They were quite popular things in those days. My cousin had one which was for a Ford Pop.

For some reason red is a poor colour when exposed to sunlight.

Red cars always seem to fade like this.

I have had 2 red cars which have "faded".

My current car is also red but the paintwork has been treated with a top coat which works like a uv filter to prevent the fading.

Would this be the same Mr. Richardson who had several motorcycle shops in the City and also sold a well known fibreglass bodied 3 wheeled car?

His shop at Intake was just called "Richardsons"

I don't believe so. I lived on Meersbrook Ave. and went to school with his elder daughter, they did own the scrapyard between Heely Station and Broadfield road, behind the old Heely Post Office.

Going back to the photo at the start of the post. The shop on the corner of Binfield Rd. was, when I was very young, Browns Electricians, then it became a secondhand furniture shop, before becoming Dwyer's Electrical Radio & TV repairs. The next shop was, I think, a ladies Hairdressers. The next was a Chip shop. The shop after that was Gladys Pearson's sweet shop, and the final shop in the row was a wool shop - which my my mother ran, on behalf of the owner, in the 60's. The bit of hedge visible in front of the property on the corner of Derbyshire Lane fronted the house and surgery of Dr. Sloan (GP).

On the other corner of Derbyshire lane (out of shot) was a fruit and veg shop, followed by a small grocers, followed by Mr Barber's Chemists shop.

On the corner of Millmount Rd. was Buckby's Off Licence and on the opposite corner, towards Meersbrook Ave, was Meersbrook Post Office, Mr. South was the sub. Post Master.

Can you remember the Malones that lived at No 2 Meersbrook Avenue?

I certainly can; Mr Malone used to stand market with fruit and veg. They had 3 children, Victor, Kathleen, and Eric.

Sorry, as you say, of course it was Jimmy. I was confusing him with his mate, Eric Strafford who lived at No. 27 M.Ave.

My mother lived at No. 21 from June 1940, when they got married until 2 months before her death in 2001.I left Sheffield in 1969.

Memories are fading now, was Mr Malone's shop up near the bottom of Scarsdale Rd. - or am I making that up?

The last time I saw any of the Malones was Kathleen who came to my mother's funeral in June 2001. I think that she told me that Victor was living up Norton somewhere?

Did you grow up around Meersbrook, Tozzin?

Uncle Bills shop was at No 947 Chesterfield Rd at the junction with Broxholme Rd, there's only Kathleen & Jimmy left now, I don't know what Jimmy is doing or where he lives, I haven't seen him for over 60years. Kathleen lives on Jordanthorpe in a house that Victor and herself bought cash. I was born and lived on the Manor Estate until I moved to what was a fabulous estate, Gleadless Valley, now it's a sorry sight. Kathleen told my sister that I had died a month ago, which was news to me!

That's the one, I wasn't making it up! I had an aunt who lived at 24 Hackthorn Rd., just by the top of Broxholme Rd.

Sorry to hear that Victor is no longer with us, I was never close to him, he was a man whilst I was still a lad.

Glad to hear that Kathleen's report of your death was greatly exaggerated!! Kathleen was always lovely to me and very kind to my mum as she grew older but she was always a little imaginative. If you see her, do give her Ian McGowan's best regards; she is probably one of the few surviving residents of the Meersbrook Ave. of my childhood.

We never had any arguement with the Malones, I have a stray memory of playing in the street as a very young kid and Mr Malone giving me the first orange I had ever seen, probably about 1950, and I didn't know what to do with it!! Happy memories.

My question re. where you grew up was because I wondered if we knew one another but, if you grew up on the Manor, it isn't likely

There were five Petrol Stations on Chesterfield Road at one time. That one near the bottom of Derbyshire Lane is now the only one left. W/E.

Where were they WE - are you counting Brocclehursts and The Wagon and Horses garage on Meadowhead ?

I remember the two just before Abbey Lane, the one at the bottom of Derbyshire Lane and - was there a very small one down at the bottom, near Valley Road. Next to the police sub-station ?
